10 New Movies You Can Still Look Forward to In 2017

We’re in the final stretch for new movies in 2017. There are still a lot coming out over the next four months, but what movies should you really be looking forward to? Well, it’s hard to say since there are so many different films yet to hit the big screen. So, I’ve decided to pick out 10 that you can still get excited about. Now, I know this is a site that prides itself on its two tier grading scale. So, I decided to split this list right down the middle and give you 5 popcorn and 5 star movies. It wasn’t easy narrowing this list down, but that’s what I’m here for. Go ahead and check out my picks and be sure to leave a comment about what movie you’re the most excited about below.

Popcorn

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (September 22nd)

The original Kingsman movie has already become a classic among comic fans, and the new movie looks like it’s going to follow in its footsteps. Normally sequels struggle to keep up with the original, but this one looks like it has all the same pieces that made the first one so great, plus Channing Tatum. Director Matthew Vaughn is back to bring British Superspy Eggsy to the U.S. to meet his American counterparts. The entire cast looks amazing for this, but I’m excited to see Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell from Game of Thrones), who I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of. If you’re looking for a comic movie that doesn’t have a lot of capes, this is for you.

The Foreigner (October 13th)

Haven’t heard of this new movie? Don’t worry, I just discovered it a few days ago. Jackie Chan ditches the slapstick and puts on his serious face in this intense looking thriller. Chan stars as a grieving father who loses his daughter in a terrorist attack. The thing is that he’s not exactly what he seems as he sets out to make everyone associated with the attack pay dearly. It’s vaguely reminiscent of The Man from Nowhere, which is a movie I highly recommend. Normally people shrug off action actors in dramatic roles, and I would too if I hadn’t seen Jean Claude Van Damme in JCVD. Needless to say, this is a popcorn film I can’t wait for.

Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd)

It’s been a crazy good year for superhero flicks and I’m really looking forward to the new movies yet to come. Now, I’ve never been a huge fan of the Thor movies. They’ve always seemed to fall short of everything else Marvel has offered (except for maybe every Iron Man movie after the first). This time around Taika Waititi is directing though, which is probably one of the smartest things Marvel has done in a long time. You might know him from his most recent films What Be Do In the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, both of which were hilarious and insightful. Marvel has a habit of trying to get their directors to stick to a common cinematic voice, but Waititi is probably just what Thor needs to get out of his rut.

Justice League (November 17th)

I know that most people would say the DCEU has only had one good movie so far (Wonder Woman), but I actually haven’t been really disappointed in anything they’ve made so far. There has been some tragedy surrounding the film tough as Zack Snyder had to step down from directing and turn the reigns over to Joss Whedon (who you might remember did The Avengers). Personally, I’ve always loved DC comics and getting to see so many new heroes make their debut alongside Wonder Woman and Bat-ffleck (who I really liked in Batman v. Superman). Say what you may, but this might be the movie I’m most excited to see as a fanboy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (December 15th)

Star Wars has been killing it with their new movies. I mean, The Force Awakens and Rogue One were both amazing movies, and The Last Jedi looks like it’s not going to be any different. Well, except it should have a lot more Mark Hamill in it. I know it’s going to be hard to sit through since the recent passing of Carrie Fisher, but it’s going to be good to see her again on the big screen. After all, I don’t think she would want fans to mourn, she would want us to celebrate the thing we love that brings us together. That’s why this movie is probably the one I am most excited to see (not just as a fanboy). Star Wars is something that brings people together, and I think it coming out during the holidays is a huge gift to the geek community.

Stars

Blade Runner 2049 (October 6th)

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Blade Runner, and there is probably a lot for fans to be worried about with a sequel coming out so long after the original. However, I have faith in director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, etc) to do it justice. No one will be able to replace Harrison Ford, by Ryan Gosling is a great choice for the lead. Especially because it’s going to be hard to tell if he’s a replicant or not. Blade Runner 2049 has a lot to live up to, but if it manages to come close to the Director’s cut of the first film, you can bet that there will be some Oscar nominations heading its way. I think there’s enough talent involved to make that a strong possibility.

Mother! (October 13th)

So, I’ve seen the trailer for this movie and I still have no idea what it’s about. Then again it is a Darren Aronofsky film, so that’s to be expected. Aronofsky has made some truly remarkable movies in the past, so it’s probably safe to have high expectations for his newest one. Plus, Jennifer Lawrence has been pretty quiet this year, not a bad thing gave her recent screw up where she scolded a reporter for using his phone… To translate his native language to English for the conference. Still, she is one of the most powerful actresses working today and lately, she seems to be starring in at least one Oscar nominated film each year. At the very least, this should be the most interesting of the new movies coming out.

Coco (November 24th)

I was torn between putting this under Stars or Popcorn, but since it’s a Pixar film you know it’s going to be nominated for an Oscar. So, Stars it was. This time Pixar travels to Mexico and to the Land of the Dead. I already know that this movie is going to be good, but I’m really excited to see it, because it’s going to cast a positive light on a community that is suffering slander under Trump’s regime. Coco should be a fun film with timely social commentary the whole family can enjoy. I’ve always loved the visual elements that come from The Day of the Dead celebration and pairing that with Pixar’s strong storytelling should be a winning combination and a ticket to an Oscar nomination.

Murder on the Orient Express (November 24th)

Of all the new movies coming out this year, I think it’s safe to say that Murder on the Orient Express is probably the most likely to get some love from the Academy (if you don’t count Coco). It’s based on a classic novel, has an enticing cast, a writer who has had a pretty strong year so far, and a director who is no stranger to Oscar nominations. It would seem that this film is set on a course to not only get some nominations but to be a possible perfect storm of talent. Then again, it also has the potential to be a movie that has so much potential that it fails to live up to it. Needless to say, I’m interested to see how things turn out for it.

Darkest Hour (November 24th)

Gary Oldman is Winston Churchill. It’s safe to say that there is an Oscar nomination in that sentence alone. It’s also probably safe to say that the movie is going to play like the greatest hits of Churchill quotes (which there are a lot of). I’ve got some pretty high hopes for this movie, mostly because Gary Oldman has yet to win an Academy Award, and I’ve got a feeling this might be the year for it. Don’t hold me to that though, at least not until I get a chance to see it and write up my review. Still, I’m definitely looking forward to this film though and really hope it lives up to my expectations. I guess we’re just going to have to wait and see.

There you have it, 10 new movies you can still look forward to this year. There are a lot more to look forward to, but going to the theater can be pricey. So I hope this helps you save a few bucks over the next few months.
