Looking to Get your Binge Watch On? Here are the Best Series for Halloween!
Halloween is right around the corner and while many of you might be dressing up as sexy a whatever to go party, many will be staying home and eating the candy that’s supposed to go to trick or treaters. Of course, there are plenty of scary movies to stream online, but what about those of you who want something binge-worthy? Well, fear not! Because I’ve managed to compile a list of the best series for you to binge during this frightful season, and all of them are on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. I’m sure you’ve all heard of the obvious choices like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, or even my personal favorite, Supernatural. So, I wanted to try to find a few lesser known series the horror genre has to offer. There’s a wide variety ranging from monsters to vampires to slashers. If you’re looking to get your fright on this Halloween, then these are the best series you can get!
7. Penny Dreadful (Netflix)
If you’re a fan of classic monsters like vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein (yes, his monster), then Penny Dreadful is going to be right up your alley. It’s a relatively short show with three seasons with ten episodes or fewer each. So it’s definitely binge-able and if you’re a serious recluse like I am, you could even knock it out over the course of a weekend. Penny Dreadful got all the stuff you can expect from a premium network like Showtime, drama, action, suspense, gratuitous nudity (though nowhere near Game of Thrones levels). Plus it’s got a great cast of recognizable actors, so you know it’s gotta be one of the best series out there.
6. Scream (Netflix)
When I was growing up MTV was known for music videos and reality TV shows, so I’m as shocked as you are that one of it’s shows made it onto a list of best series to stream. However, Scream offers everything that people love about slasher movies. It’s got clueless teens who find themselves being picked off by a killer with a vendetta, an incompetent police force, and plenty of blood. While it’s based on the movie franchise, I have to admit that I’m pretty fond of the revamp they did on the killers look. Definitely less satirical and scarier.
5. The Strain (Hulu)
Slap Guillermo del Toro’s name on anything and I am sold. He’s got an incredible sense of visuals that always manages to leave me both fascinated and creeped out. So when he announced The Strain, I knew it was going to be one of the best series on television. Luckily for those who are just now hearing about it, you can catch the first three seasons on Hulu. Trust me, these vampires definitely don’t sparkle. In fact, del Torro has managed to come up with this incredible new mythology behind them and the protagonist is a doctor trying to discover the science behind it all. If you’re looking to lose a weekend, this is the way to go.
4. Slasher (Netflix)
I actually just discovered this show a few days ago and I’m already on season two. Honestly, I had no idea that Canadians could be so brutal because this is a show that is not for those with a weak stomach. If you like a lot of blood though then this is probably the best series on this list for you. From what I can tell, each season is its own murder mystery with a new cast, new killer, and new location. A common theme though is that some tragedy from the past manages to come back to haunt everyone close to it. It’s slow going at first, but definitely, one that sucks you in. Plus with only eight episodes per season, it’s really easy to get through.
3. The Exorcist (Hulu)
Now I know that this series has a lot to live up to being named after one of the best horror movies ever. However, I really enjoyed the first season. I know that demonic possession is right up some horror fans alley, and this is one of the best series I’ve ever seen with a demon at the center of it. It is as spooky as they come and I would even argue that it’s actually pretty terrifying. Honestly, I think it lives up to the high expectations that are set before it and this is the perfect season to catch up on this series. Best of all, season two is just getting started. So, you’ll have plenty to look forward to if you get hooked.
2. Hannibal (Amazon Prime)
Once upon a time, I used to think of Anthony Hopkins as the definitive Hannibal Lecter, after this show now I can only picture Mads Mikkelsen. The series was a twisted vision of Lecter before he found himself caught by the FBI when he was actually a consultant helping to catch other serial killers. Don’t worry, because Hannibal is definitely not a good guy in this series, but it offers an amazing look into his past. This series messes with your mind more than anything else, but I think it’s probably the best series ever cut down before it’s prime (sorry Firefly). Still, it’s one that is worth watching if you want a more artistic and intellectual horror show.
1. Stranger Things (Netflix)
I’m pretty sure most of the world has already seen this series, but I couldn’t put together this list without mentioning the best series Netflix has ever put out. If you haven’t seen this show yet, you definitely need to get caught up, because the second season is coming out soon and you will definitely want more after the last episode. It’s an amazingly 80’s series with a cast that you will fall in love with and plenty of spooky stuff that there’s really no way to explain. If you haven’t seen it, this should be priority number one before Halloween hits. At the very least, it will make a lot of the costumes this year make more sense.
Those are my recommendations of some of the best series to binge-watch before Halloween. There are plenty of other horror show out there though, so be sure to comment below with your favorite that’s available to stream right now.
