10 Actors Who Played Multiple Comic Characters

There are a lot of lists out there about actors who have played multiple comic characters. With how many of the superhero movies coming out these days, that’s not such an exclusive club anymore. However, while those lists might have actors with two roles under their belts, I’ve decided to one-up them by focusing on actors who have been in three or more comic book movies on the big and small screen. What can I say I like to challenge myself and have no social life. That’s why I put in the time perusing through filmographies on IMDB to find the actors and actresses that deserve a spot on here. There are a few no-brainers that made the list, but I there will definitely be a few surprises on here for you. So without further adieu, I present 10 actors who played multiple comic characters.

Michael Clarke Duncan

Comic Characters: Wilson Fisk (Daredevil), Manute (Sin City), Kilowog (Green Lantern)

Michael Clarke Duncan was one of the celebrity deaths in recent years that hit me the hardest. Despite playing so many menacing comic book characters in the past, he was just a big old teddy bear at the end of the day. As far as the parts he took on, those were much more like grizzly bears. While Green Lantern and Daredevil might have been flops, his turn as Manute in Sin City was incredible (though brief). I’m sure if he was still around then he would definitely have gotten even more comic book roles because you can’t fake being that much of a beast. RIP big guy. You’re sorely missed.

Doug Jones

Comic Characters: Pencilhead (Mystery Men), Norrin Radd (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), Abe Sapien (Hellboy), Deadbolt (Arrow)

Doug Jones is perhaps one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood. The problem is that you hardly ever get a chance to see his face. In fact, for two of his most popular comic book roles, you’d never know it was him. He got a chance to play Abe Sapien (the character was voiced by David Hyde Pierce) and the Silver Surfer in one of those terrible Fantastic Four films. He’s an actor well known for his lanky physique and incredibly expressive physicality, which makes him perfect to play inhuman roles. With how well he manages to disappear into a role I doubt we’ve seen the last of him in comic book roles on either the big or small screen.

Brandon Routh

Comic Characters: Superman (Superman Returns), Ray Palmer (The Arrowverse), Todd Ingram (Scott Pilgrim vs The World), Dylan Dog (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night)

When it comes to comic book roles, you don’t always get it right the first time. Routh got his start in Superman Returns as the Man of Steel. It wasn’t a great film, but it was definitely better than Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Since then he snagged a part in Scott Pilgrim vs The World alongside the actor who came in at number one on this list. He even appeared in the adaptation of a supernatural Italian comic book series. Unfortunately, he was no John Constantine. It wasn’t until he made the switch to playing a hero on TV that he knocked it out of the park as Ray Palmer aka The Atom. Routh is just the first of many actors on this list that needed two or three tries to get the right comic book role.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Comic Characters: The Comedian (Watchmen),  Clay (The Losers), Thomas Wayne (Batman V Superman), Negan (The Walking Dead)

While he might always be Papa Winchester to me, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has tucked more than a few comic roles under his belt. He’s probably best known as Negan on the AMC’s The Walking Dead, but before that he played another famed comic book psychopath, The Comedian. While he might have had a small role in Batman V. Superman it’s one that has sparked a lot of rumors that we could get to see him in a Flashpoint movie as an alternate Batman. Fingers crossed that DC listens to fans on this one. In the meantime, fans will just have to be satisfied watching him bash in undead brains for the foreseeable future.

Scarlett Johansson

Comic Characters: Rebecca (Ghost World), Silken Floss (The Spirit), The Major (Ghost in the Shell), Black Widow (Marvel)

While she might be best known as Natasha Romanoff from the Marvel movies, Johansson has actually appeared as a number of comic characters on the big screen. Recently she even sparked a whitewashing controversy by taking on the role of The Major who has traditionally been portrayed as Japanese. The controversy doesn’t stop there though since she also snagged a part in Frank Miller’s The Spirit, which was not well received by, well, anyone. To top it off, those rumors of her getting a final Black Widow movie before leaving the MCU for good have proven to be true. Now that she is going through, there’s room for her to branch out into even more comic book roles. I wonder who she could play in the DCEU
