10 Upcoming New Movies to Get Excited About in 2020
Wonder Woman 1984 – June 5th
Wonder Woman was easily the first great film in the DCU. It raised the bar for movies like Aquaman and Shazam to rise above the slump that the films found themselves in. Now, the Amazon is back doing her thing on the big screen. As if the title didn’t give it away, she had a bit of time to figure out the world of man, and her story picks up again in the year 1984 where she will cross paths with a few classic villains including her nemesis Cheetah (Kristen Wigg). Most importantly, director Patty Jenkins is back in charge, which means that the movie is in more than capable hands. I’m betting it will be an action-packed, empowering film with plenty of 80s nostalgia (a la Stranger Things).
Ghostbusters: Afterlife – July 10th
Look, I was rooting for the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, but as much as I wanted to like it, it just wasn’t good. The franchise is getting a second chance at life thanks to original director Ivan Reitman’s son, Jason. I can’t think of anyone better to continue the legacy, and he’s brought back a ton of old faces from the originals. Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Akroyd, and Ernie Hudson are back in their former roles. However, they’re also joined by some impressive newcomers, including Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard. There is little doubt in my mind that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will capture everything we loved about the originals while also updating it for newer audiences. I’m hardly ever certain with new movies, but I’m betting big on this one.
Tenet – July 17th
According to IMDb, “The plot is currently unknown. The project is described as an action epic revolving around international espionage, time travel, and evolution.” So, why am I excited about it? Because of the fact that Christopher Nolan is an absolute genius when it comes to mind-melting films. He gave us an incredible Batman trilogy, Inception, and Momento. So, while I might not know much about what Tenet is about, I do know that I’m excited to find out. Details are sketchy on the plot, but it looks like he’s pulled together an impressive cast with the likes of Robert Pattinson, John David Washington, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. So, even with how little we have to go on, I have a very, very, VERY good feeling about Tenet.
Bill and Ted Face the Music – August 21st
One of the greatest fictional movie bands of all time is returning to the big screen in Bill and Ted Face the Music. The film will apparently pick up with a middle-aged Bill and Ted still struggling to pump out a single hit. A lot has changed for them, and now they’re actually dads with daughters of their own (Samara Weaving and Brigette Lunday-Paine). A lot of great comedians are attached to the project as well. More than that, I’m excited to once more see national treasure, Keanu Reeves on screen again. The man is an endless source of inspiration for his kindness, generosity, and humility. Getting to see him take on one of his most iconic roles will definitely be one of the things I’m looking forward to the most in 2020. Oh, and Alex Winters will be back too.
Halloween Kills – October 16th
2018’s Halloween was better than it had any right to be. I know there are a ton of Michael Myers fans out there, but let’s face facts, all the films after 2 were atrocious (don’t get me started on the remakes). Halloween reminded us just how terrifying Michael can be, but more importantly, showed that he wasn’t the only badass in the family. Jamie Lee Curtis earned the 2018’s Biggest Badass of the year and inspired my newest article on Geriaction and how women are the future of the micro-genre. Not only that, but Halloween was one of my favorite movies of 2018. Taking all that into account, there’s no reason why I wouldn’t be excited to see what comes next for Lori and her family, especially because we all know Micahel isn’t really dead. The question is if he’s going to come out on top in round 2.
Dune – December 18th
I have to be straight, Dune is the film I’m looking forward to the most of all the new movies coming to theaters in 2020. Denis Villeneuve is a phenomenal director, especially when it comes to sci-fi (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, etc). He’s gone ahead and pulled together one of the most impressive casts I’ve seen for one film in years. David Bautista, Jason Mamoa, Zendaya, Oscar Issac, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem… The list goes on and on. Dune is a cult classic and this remake looks to be taking it incredibly seriously. We haven’t had a chance to see what we might expect from it, but I can guarantee it’s going to be awe-inspiring. Looks like 2020 will be going out on a high note with this epic.
Honorable Mentions:
Nightmare Alley – Unknown
Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – February 22nd
Black Widow – May 1st
Soul – June 19th
Like I said, narrowing it down to just 10 new movies to be excited for every year is a tough task. There were more than a few I hated cutting from my picks, but I’m pretty confident that the films I chose are going to be pretty damn good. Still, I want to hear what new movies you’re the most excited for in 2020. Leave a comment below telling me what films have you stocked and be sure to check back as these movies hit theaters because I’ll be diligently reviewing them.
