10 Upcoming New Movies to Get Excited About in 2019
It’s Time to Get Excited for the New Movies Coming in 2019!
2018 was actually a pretty decent year for new movies, but alas it’s come to an end. While I hate to see it leave, I love to watch it go, because that means we have a ton of new movies to look forward to in 2019! In typical Stars & Popcorn fashion I decided to gather up a list of 10 new movies that I’m the most excited to see in the new year. Narrowing it down to just 10 was a lot harder than it sounded (and it already sounded pretty hard) but I decided to focus on the flicks that look like they’re going to be the most fun to sit through. This list has a few superhero movies, a long awaited sequel, some action movies, and even a horror film from a director I’ve been watching closely. There’s no telling if these films will actually be any good since there aren’t a lot of details regarding a few of them, but I’m hoping that they’re all going to be worth the price of admission.
Captain Marvel– March 8th
In 2018, Marvel comics broke new ground by giving us a big screen adaptation of one of the most popular black superheroes in comic book history. It was a huge step forward for diversity and proved that people want to see black heroes. Now, they’re aiming to do it again with a female superhero. She might not be the first comic book heroine to get her own movie (DC beat Marvel to the punch with Wonder Woman), but that doesn’t make me any less excited to see this film, especially as it leads up to Avengers: Endgame (which barely missed making this list of new movies to look forward to). Captain Marvel looks like the perfect movie to see in celebration of International Women’s day.
Us– March 15th
Jordan Peele blew my mind with Get Out. As much as I was expecting it to be a good movie, it was so much more than I could have imagined. Since then he produced BlacKkKlansman, which was another film the exceeded my already high expectations. In 2019, he returns to direct Us, a film about a family terrorized by uninvited strangers while staying at their beach house. It might sound a little bit like The Strangers, but I’m hoping it can take the place of The Strangers: Prey at Night (one of the more disappointing films of 2018). While I have high expectations for Peele as a director, Us is going to prove whether Get Out was a fluke or the birth of one of the best horror directors in modern cinema.
Shazam!– April 5th
I know that there have been a lot of fanboys out there complaining about DC movies. However, I was pretty impressed with Man of Steel, Aquaman and Wonder Woman, and I even enjoyed Batman V Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe that I don’t think there’s room for improvement. However, I think Zachary Levi is just the person to appease the masses of whining fan boys out there who hate DC movies like it’s their job. He’s as big of a fan of comics as we are and he’s definitely got the charisma to bring Shazam to the big screen. It’s not the only DC movie coming to theaters next year, but it’s the one I have the highest hopes for. If it does let us down, there’s always Joker to look forward to in October.
Hellboy– April 12th
As sad as it is not to see the final entry in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy, I have to admit that I’m pretty excited to see a hard R-rated adaptation of this comic book character. 2019 is already packed to the gills with comic book movies, but if you’re looking for a hero that doesn’t wear tights than this might just be the film for you. The film packs an impressive cast with the likes of Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, and David Harbour in the lead roles. However, the real selling point for me is director Neil Marshall who brought us films like The Descent and Dog Soldiers. A take on Hellboy a bit more rooted in horror than fantasy is enough to put this remake among my most anticipated new movies of 2019.
John Wick 3: Chapter 3– May 17th
Chad Stahelski and David Leitch quickly skyrocketed to the top of my list when it comes to action directors after their collaboration on John Wick. As much as I loved the first Chapter in Keanu Reeves hitman saga, the sequel managed to meet my high expectations. With the third entry hitting theaters in 2019 it was impossible for me not to include it among my most anticipated new movies. Of course, Reeves is back, and he’s joined by a lot of familiar faces from the last two movies, as well as a few new ones that look like exciting additions to the mythos surrounding the best hitman in movie history. Even if it’s not the best entry in the John Wick trilogy, it’s still one of the most hotly anticipated new movies of 2019 and I’m going to be standing at the front of the line opening night.
