10 Upcoming New Movies to Get Excited About in 2019

Godzilla: King of the Monsters– May 31st

Godzilla is a staple of my childhood and the king of the giant movie monsters. Personally, I really enjoyed Gareth Edwards vision of the giant movie monster in the 2014 reboot of the series. While he might not be directing the sequel, that doesn’t make me any less excited to see the King of the Monsters throw down in a battle royal featuring some of his greatest adversaries. Of course, there are also a few human components to the film that earn it a spot among my most anticipated new movies of 2019, most noteably Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things. I don’t expect this movie to be a cinematic masterpiece, but there’s nothing like watching giant monster laying a smackdown on one another to get my blood pumping.

Spider-Man: Far from Home– July 5th

Yeah, Avengers: Endgame looks like it’s going to be one of the biggest new movies of 2019, but I’m more excited to see Spider-man get back to what he does best after shaking off that whole Thanos snap. Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the best movies in the MCU and I’m hoping that Far From Home will give us everything that was so wonderful about the first film. Of course, Tom Holland is back as the best incarnation of the webslinger we’ve ever seen on the big screen (sorry, not sorry, Tobey). This time he’s taking on Mysterio, an illusion based villain from the comic being played by Jake Gyllenhaal (who is one hell of an actor in his own right). We’ve had our ups and downs when it came to past Spider-Man movies, but I’m hoping Holland can prove that Marvel has finally gotten the web slinger right.

Hobbs and Shaw– August 2nd

Once upon a time The Fast and the Furious franchise was a joke. Then Dwayne Johnson joined the team and shortly after that Jason Statham made an appearance. Since then, the series has become a truly legitimate action series that somehow keeps getting better and better the more absurd it becomes. It was only a matter of time until there was an eventual spin-off and now two of the biggest actions stars in the industry are getting a chance to kick major big screen ass. However, it’s the fact that their getting backup from the director of Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 (and John Wick co-creator), David Leitch. Typically I shrug off hard action flicks like this, but the director and actor combination is just too much for me to ignore. While it might not have Vin Diesel, Hobbs and Shaw has still managed to become one of the new movies that’s quickly become one of my most anticipated for the year.

Zombieland 2– October 11th

The gang is back for one more round at the zombie rodeo.

The first Zombieland is easily one of the best horror-comedies of all time. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw Zombieland 2 slated for a 2019 release. At first I was a little iffy, but then I saw that the film has Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin returning. That was enough to stir my curiosity, but the fact that Dave Callaham and Rhett Reese are writing, and Ruben Fleischer is directing sealed the deal. That’s right, the bad is back together to bring us a long awaited sequel to their modern masterpiece. This is going to be a popcorn flick all the way, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less excited to see it come October. It’s got all the ingredients and even the same chef that made the first one so damn good, so I’ve got high hopes that Zombieland 2 will be one of the best new movies of 2019.

Untitled Terminator Project- November 1st

Looks like the Terminators have a lot to worry about in 2019.

Look, I know that we haven’t had a good Terminator movie since Judgement Day and I was just going to skip over this flick until I saw who was in the director’s chair. Tim Miller’s first big screen movie was none other than one of the best superhero movies of all time, Deadpool. He managed to do the impossible and brought a faithful adaptation of the Merc of the Mouth to theaters. Now he’s turned his attention to the Terminator and is rebooting the series with the helps of writer David S. Goyer and Arnold Schwarzenegger. While there are very few details about the plot right now, I have a good feeling about Miller taking on the franchise since he’s such an incredible visual storyteller. Of course, this could bite me in the butt, but I’m still counting this among my anticipated new movies for 2019.

Honorary Mention: Alita: Battle Angel, MIB International, Toy Story 4, Avengers: Endgame, and Detective Pikachu.

Like I said before, it was tough narrowing down the long list of new movies coming out in 2019 to just 10. So you better believe there are a lot more than just the films listed that I’m looking forward to. However, I want to hear your thoughts. Be sure to comment below what movies you’re looking forward to the most in 2019 and I’ll do my best to give you timely reviews that let you know if they’re worth watching. Afterall, not all great movies are good, so you can count on Stars & Popcorn to tell you how it really is when it comes to what’s in theaters!
