5 New Movies to Look Forward to In September 2018

Another month means more new movies to look forward to in theaters. September signals that time of year when studios switch gears from summer blockbusters and the awakening of awards season, which means you won’t get too many more chances to see popcorn flicks as 2018 comes to an end. Don’t worry though, because that also means that the terrible horror movies are getting ready to drop as October looms in the distance. Luckily, this month we see a not so subtle blend of all these elements, so there’s something for everyone. In typical Stars & Popcorn fashion, I’ve narrowed this month’s 5 new movies to a combination of movies that should be good and some that should be fun as well. As always though, I want to hear what movies you’re excited to see, so I can get those reviews up for you as soon as possible. So, be sure to comment below!

The Nun (September 7th)

So far this year there have been some pretty big let downs when it comes to the horror genre. Movies like Insidious: the Last Key, Strangers: Prey at Night and Slender Man have left a big old horror shaped hole in my heart. Luckily, Hereditary gave us a bit of a pick me up in June, but with Halloween coming up fast it’s time to get some good new movies to add to the horror genre. My hope is that The Nun is more like The Conjuring films and less like the Annabelle spin-offs. I’m a fan of director Corin Hardy’s last film, The Hallow, which bodes well for The Nun. Hell, even some of the ads for it have had to be taken down for being too scary. I’m not going to count my chickens before they hatch though, so we’ll just have to see how it is, come September 7th.

The Predator (September 14th)

I’ve loved the Predator series since the moment Schwarzenegger and Weathers shared that epic handshake. Since then I’ve rarely been disappointed with the movies, and the fact that Shane Black is directing the new installment in the series has gotten me pretty excited to what he can do with everyone’s favorite intergalactic big game hunter. Toss in the fact that it’s loaded with actors I love like Thomas Jane, Sterling K. Brown, and Keegan-Michael Key and you’ve got a recipe for an awesome end of summer movie. Let’s face it, there’s no way this is aiming to be Oscar Bait, so lets hope that Black sticks to what the franchise does best and gives us lots of suspense, blood, and explosions. As long as it does that then I think this is going to be one of the best new movies in September.

White Boy Rick (September 14th)

Originally this was a film that almost made it onto my 10 Upcoming Movies to Get Excited About in 2018. We’ve had a lot of crazy new movies based on true stories over the last year or two, and this certainly looks like it’s poised to be another one that proves that fact is stranger than fiction. Toss in the fact that Matthew McConaughey has been turning in some truly extraordinary performances recently and I’m willing to take a chance on this flick. Besides, who doesn’t want to hear the story of the youngest drug kingpin/ undercover informants in America’s history? I’m willing to be that this is probably one of those early Oscar bait movies, which means it’s going to have its eye on the prize and hopefully that translates to a well-made film we can all look forward to.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls (September 21st)

Right off the bat, I’m going to admit that the reason I’m interested in this film is because it’s being directed by Eli Roth. Yeah, Hostel, Cabin Fever, Death Wish Eli Roth. One of the head honchos when it comes to the splat pack. So, how’s he going to make a movie aimed at young adults? Well, I guess we’re all going to find out September 21st. To be honest, the trailer doesn’t look that bad and this could be one of those rare new movies that’s a family-friendly Halloween flick. In other words, I’m more curious than excited for The House with a Clock in Its Walls, but that’s no reason to suspect the worst. Besides, it’ll be nice to have a movie for the whole family to look forward to.

The Sister Brothers (September 21st)

Looking at this trailer I have no idea what to expect, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to like it. John C. Riley teams up with Joaquin Phoenix as a pair of assassins working in the old west. Whether it’s going to be a comedy or a drama with a few funny moments remains to be seen, but it’s the fact that The Sister Brothers is a western that peaked my interest. Honestly, I’m just excited to see a new entry into the genre because it’s been a while since we’ve seen a decent addition to the genre. Of all the new movies coming out in September, I feel like The Sister Brothers is probably the safest bet. Call it a gut feeling or whatever you want, but I’ve got a good feeling about this movie. I just hope I’m right.

Of course, there are a ton of other new movies coming out in September. So, I want to hear what movies you’re looking forward to the most. Be sure to leave a comment and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the movies you want to see the most!
