5 New Movies to Look Forward to In October 2019
October Has a Ton of New Movies to Get Excited About!
The final quarter of the year is when studios start to push the movies they think will be Oscar contenders. That usually means we get a lot of heavy-handed movies that are trying to appeal more to old, pompous white guys rather than your average moviegoer. Fear not though, because this October we’ve got plenty of new movies to look forward to. So many that I decided to do an honorable mention for two movies I believe will be getting a limited release this month. Typically I look forward to new horror flicks seeing as how Halloween is right around the corner. This month though, we don’t have many good looking scary movies, but we’ve got plenty of other fun films for you to enjoy. Take a look at what you have to look forward to and let me know in the comments what movie you’re the most excited for this month!
Joker– October 4th
There’s been a lot of controversy regarding Todd Phillips’ new take on the classic DC villain (this time played by Joaquin Phoenix). A lot of the internet thinks that it’s going to be a film for incels to rally behind to justify their skewed perception of reality that makes them believe they’re a bunch of victims. So much so that the military even warned soldiers about possible violence at early screenings. Still, critics and audiences at film festivals that it’s been shown at have raved about how good it is. My hope is that this version of the Joker plays like a serial killer biopic, one that examines what drove a man to become a monster without justifying or apologizing for it. No matter what though, I’m sure Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker will be better than Jared Leto’s.
Gemini Man– October 11th
Will Smith is taking on Will Smith in this action film from Ang Lee. The premise is an intriguing one as an aging assassin finds himself face to face with a younger clone of himself that has been sent to kill him. It’s youth versus experience! Nature versus nurture! Who will win? Well, the audience for one thing. The film looks like it takes a step back from the awe-inspiring visuals and philosophical premises that the filmmaker has been known for in the past and is sticking with hard-hitting action backed up with solid performances from an impressive cast (hey, Will Smith is pulling double duty, after all). Best of all, the digitally de-aged version of Smith doesn’t actually look that creepy in the trailer.
The Addams Family– October 11th
The original Addams Family movies are cult classics, especially for all you 90s kids out there. Well, now a lot of those 90s kids have kids of there own, which is why it’s so exciting to see a new Addams Family movie hitting theaters this year. Unlike the previous ones, this new version is going to be animated and will feature a pretty impressive cast. Actors such as Charlize Theron, Oscar Issac, Nick Kroll, and more. The trailer makes it look like the perfect spooky film that the whole family can enjoy, and it’s one of the few animated movies that I’m still looking forward to in 2019. The only downside is that there are going to be a lot of lovers of the original with high expectations for this film. Hopefully, directors Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon can meet them.
Zombieland: Double Tap– October 18th
One of my favorite horror-comedies (and zombie movies) is getting a long-awaited sequel this year! The film made my list of 10 movies that I was/am excited to see in 2019 and the new trailer seems to have confirmed my suspicions that it’s going to be brilliant. A lot of sequels lose some of the magic that audiences loved in the originals, but this movie got the whole gang back together for another romp through the zombie apocalypse. Not only is the original cast back, but the same director and writers have returned as well. There’s nothing quite like a new horror movie to enjoy in October and while it might not be a traditionally “scary” movie, I think Zombieland: Double Tap is going to be the perfect movie to see in theaters this month.
Jojo Rabbit- October 18th
It probably doesn’t need to be said, but I’m going to say it anyway, Nazis are the worst. In fact, I’m a huge fan of anyone willing to punch one in the face. That being said, I’m actually really excited to see this comedy from Taika Waititi (the guy who brought us Thor: Ragnorak). The film follows a young boy in the Hitler youth who finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. He has to search his conscience to figure out what he should do and his imaginary friend isn’t too helpful. I should probably mention that said imaginary friend is actually Hitler (played by the director). With all the hate in the world, I can’t wait to see this anti-hate movie in theaters. Plus, critics have been raving about Scarlett Johansson’s performance in it.
Honorable Mentions:
Parasite– October 11th
Need a reason to want to see Parasite? How about that it’s from Boon Joon-Ho, the director that made The Host and Snowpiercer. Still not sold? Well, it also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year, which usually means it’s a pretty good movie.
Lighthouse– October 18th
The director of The Witch is throwing Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in a film about two turn of the century lighthouse keepers trying to keep their sanity despite their isolation. I’m excited to see Pattinson prove he has the acting chops to play Batman in this psychological thriller.
