The Top 10 Best Home Invasion Movies

5. Don’t Breathe

This is America, of course the blind guy has a gun!

There have been a few entries on this list of home invasion movies where the intruders have found out the hard way that they picked the wrong “victim” the prey on. Don’t Breathe though twists this concept and makes the intruders the good guys this time around. Well, maybe not good guys, but the lesser of two evils. A trio of small-time hoodlums decide to break into the home of an old blind guy in order to steal a ton of cash from him. The tides turn though as it soon becomes apparent that the old blind guy is much more dangerous than they could have ever expected (that should have known better than to mess with Stephen Lang). I still think this is one of the best horror movies of the new millennium. So you should probably check it out if you haven’t seen it.

4. Inside aka À l’intérieur

First her ankles were swollen and now this!

As twisted as some of these home invasion movies have been, none of them hold a candle to Inside. The French film follows an expectant mother who is terrorized by a woman who wants to take her unborn baby. They say there is nothing stronger than a mother’s love and Inside twists that as the invader viciously attacks anyone who comes between her and her goal of obtaining the unborn child. What makes Inside so chilling is that the psychotic woman is a master manipulator as well and manages to outwit any would-be saviors that come along. Of course, anyone who catches on to the act meets with a violent end. Most home invasion movies feature men as the villains, so it only seemed right to include one with a terrifying woman.

3. Sleep Tight

He might invade every aspect of your privacy, but he’ll also take a look at that dripping faucet.

This film recently made an appearance on Stars & Popcorn’s list of the Best Stalker Movies and just happens to be a perfect addition to this Home Invasion Movies list as well. Sleep Tight is mostly told from the perspective of a chilling psychopath named César who works as a concierge for a posh apartment complex in Spain. César lives to spread misery since he’s incapable of happiness and resents seeing it in anyone else. Throughout the film, he repeatedly breaks into a woman’s apartment to sabotage her happiness. Her uncrushable positivity though forces him to escalate his plans in truly twisted ways. This is a strange movie because it follows the villain and forces the audience to identify with him. Be forewarned though, this film will make your skin crawl.

2. The Strangers

This is why millennials never answer the door if they aren’t expecting someone.

Billed as being loosely based on a true story, The Strangers is another film I would consider one of the best horror movies of the new millennium. A young couple is relentlessly terrorized by a trio of strangers who seem more interested in playing a game of cat and mouse than in straight-up murdering them. The most shocking part of the whole film is when the killers reveal the only reason they’re doing this is that the couple happened to be home. Unfortunately, the recent sequel The Strangers: Prey At Night didn’t quite live up to the original. However, I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with what is easily one of the greatest home invasion movies ever made.

1. Home Alone

home invasion movies
Kevin’s reign of terror almost came to an end that fateful night.

We’ve seen a number of twisted psychopaths on this list of home invasion movies, but none of them come close to the chilling brutality of… KEVIN!. Home Alone probably seems out of place on this list, but it meets all the requirements to be featured on it. The film follows a young boy who is accidentally left home alone when his family forgets to do a proper headcount before flying off to France. What should have been a fun-filled adventure for the kid turns deadly serious when a pair of burglars target his home. Kevin has no choice to defend his homestead using traps that would make even Jigsaw cringe. Of course, Home Alone takes a much more Loony Tunes approach to its violence, which means it’s totally ok. Still, I wouldn’t say that to the men who suffered debilitating physical and psychological damage at this budding psychopath’s hands.

There are tons of other great home invasion movies out there though. If you think I missed one that deserves to be on this list, let me know in the comments. I’d also love to hear which of these movies is your favorite. As always, I’ll constantly be updating this list as new home invasion movies hit the big screen. So, don’t forget to check back from time to time to see how the rankings have changed!
