Best TV Shows Based on Comics to Binge Watch
Comic fans rejoice! There are tons of great series to binge watch!
TV is taking full advantage of all the great comic material there is out there and there are a lot of great tv series to binge watch. With The Defenders out now and The Tick, there is a lot to be excited about. However, there are a lot of truly great comic series that are available for fans to binge watch online. So, I decided to put together this list of some of the absolute best you can watch once you’re done with The Defenders. Of course, I decided to avoid the series leading up to The Defenders, because if you haven’t seen Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage or Iron Fist, then you really bigger concerns than this list before watching The Defenders. That being said, I put together a list of the series that are as beloved by fans as they are by critics. The only real criteria was that they had to be streamable. So, let the binge watching begin my fellow comic fans. Here are the best comic series you should be watching before summer ends!
Wynonna Earp– Netflix
This is a recent discovery for me and I will have to admit that I had my hesitations after the first episode. However, those quickly passed as the series kicked into high gear and I found this to be a great show to binge watch. It features a descendant of gunslinger Wyatt Earp who suffers from a family curse that requires her to put down the Revenants (demon thingies) of the men her ancestor killed. This show initially passed under my radar but features some fun characters and great female protagonists. At only 13 episodes it’s an easy weekend watch, and definitely not your typical comic series. Anyone looking for a horror series (especially Supernatural fans) should really enjoy Wynonna Earp.
Arrow– Netflix
I’m sure a lot of people know how awesome Arrow is. Still, it’s an amazingly series to binge watch. True, it has struggled with some of its later seasons, but the most recent proved that the magic is back. It features some of your favorite DC characters and even crosses overs with a lot of other DC series from the WB. Marvel might own Netflix right now, but DC is killing it on cable, and it all started with Arrow. Not only does Stephen Amell do a great job in the series, but he’s such a good guy in real life, it’s easy to root for him. It’s got a few seasons under its belt, so if you’re binging it you might need a week or two. Trust me though, comic fans will not be disappointed in it (well, they might not be big fans of season 3 and 4, but 3 out of 5 ain’t bad).
Flash– Netflix
The first spin off from Arrow features one of the most beloved DC characters of all time, and its star manages to meet fan expectations with his charm and warmth. The Flash is only about three seasons in length, but it has a lot going on. Not only that, but it’s filled with some of the best special effects I’ve ever seen on television. Flash is a series that leans towards more traditional comic fans, but it won’t disappoint those who don’t know the character at all. It’s a great family friendly show that the whole family can lose a weekend binge watching. Barry Allen is the heart of the Justice league and this series manages to show off that defining characteristic brilliantly
IZombie– Netflix
Man, the WB is just killing it. I had no idea that IZombie was based on a comic, but it definitely makes for a fantastic tv show to binge watch. The series is about a girl turned zombie who works in the city morgue. It makes sense given her need for brains, but the catch is she gains the memories and personality traits of the people she eats. Of course, this means that she has to help solve murders when she can. The series goes much deeper though as it tackles social issues in the form of zombies, especially in the more recent seasons. The cast is amazing, especially Rose McIver who pretty much plays a new character every week. Oh, and it’s from the producers of Veronica Mars.
Preacher– Hulu
Preacher is the most pleasant surprise I’ve had in a long time. Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this is probably the best ADAPTATION I’ve ever seen of a comic series. The original comic by Garth Ennis was a bit extreme and seemed like it would be impossible to put on cable. However, Preacher pulls it off beautifully. The changes made to the series remain faithful to the comic while giving fans something completely new to watch. Pair that with an incredible cast with more chemistry than should be legal. Honestly, it’s the best comic book series on television and those with a dark sense of humor will love it. It’s ones of the easiest shows to binge watch you can stream right now.
Those are just a few series for you to binge watch after the likes of The Tick and The Defenders hit streaming services, but it’s definitely a list that deserves to make its way to your queue either way. There are definitely a lot of other fun series like Van Helsing, Lucifer, and Legion. Let me know in the comments what your favorite comic based series is and where we can stream it. No one wants to actually have a productive weekend, right?
