Now Streaming: August 2018
Netflix
P.S. I Love You– August 1st
If you want a romantic movie that your boyfriend will actually watch without complaining, then have I got a film for you. P.S. I Love You is one of my favorite recent romances, not because it’s good, but because it tears at my heartstrings every time. It tells the tale of one of the most selfless acts I’ve seen on the big screen. A man plans for his death by organizing letters and gifts to be delivered to his wife in the year following it. His love for her means that he’s more worried about her dealing with the loss than he is about actually dying. Just thinking about it makes my allergies act up and gets my eyes watering.
Like Father– August 3rd
If you’re a fan of Kristen Bell (and who isn’t) then this Netflix original movie might be one worth streaming in August. A woman left at the altar goes on her honeymoon with her estranged father. I know what you’re thinking, and I’m really hoping it’s not “that kind of movie.” Alongside her is Kelsey Grammer who plays her dad. I’m sure this is going to be one of those films where a kid learns they’re more like their parent than they want to admit, but with Bell and Grammer in it, I’m happy to take in a cliche or two.
Hostiles– August 15th
Hostiles was actually a film I enjoyed a lot earlier this year because it’s relevant in a way you might not expect. Christian Bale plays a soldier who has made a career slaughtering Native Americans in old testament “eye for an eye” style. However, his prejudice is put to the test when he is ordered to escort a war prisoner back to his homeland. To be honest, Hostiles is not an easy movie to watch, but it’s a film about facing prejudices and redeeming yourself for them. In other words, it’s a movie that’s good and timely.
Disenchantment– August 17th
I have not been this excited to start streaming a Netflix series for a long time. Matt Groening is a genius when it comes to cartoons. He’s the guy responsible for The Simpsons and Futurama, two series that stoners have been binge watching for decades now. His new series takes everything you love about those shows and puts a fantasy twist on it. Best of all, this time around he’s featuring a female hero. To his credit, he’s always been a forward-thinking creator (despite the whole Apu thing recently), so it’s going to be good to see what he does with her in Disenchantment.
Ghoul– August 24th
To be honest, even after seeing the trailer for Ghoul I have no idea what to expect. That’s not going to stop me from streaming it as soon as it hits Netflix though. From what I can tell it’s a series with a unique twist on the possession genre. A military interrogator finds her life turned upside down as it becomes clear that the man she’s trying to get information out of is far from ordinary. It looks incredibly creepy and it’s been a while since a good horror series popped up. I just hope there’s a sequence where they waterboard a demon with holy water.
Hopefully, this list helps with your streaming habit and gives you some diamonds among the rough. I know how hard it can be to find something good to watch, so be sure to let me know what movies and shows I should check out on my streaming services. There’s a lot out there, so any tips you have are appreciated. Until next month, godspeed with your binge-watching.
