The Definitive Ranking of Pixar Movies from Worst to Best

20. Toy Story 2

Pixar movies
Toy Story 3: The Friendening.

This is the point in the list where starting to rank the Pixar movies became difficult. A lot of people are huge fans of Toy Story 2 and while I’m pretty ambivalent about it. It’s far from one of the greats in Pixar’s filmography but that means it’s still pretty good. We get a lot of the characters that we knew and loved from the first film, but the new additions are a bit rough around the edges. This time around the story focused heavily on Woody who reconnects with some of the toys that were released alongside him in the good old days. All I can say is that it’s pretty obvious why Andy only wanted a Woody doll.

19. Monsters University

Pixar movies
It’s no Animal House, but it’ll do.

Oddly enough, Monsters University is the only Pixar movie that serves as a prequel. It tells the tale of how two of it’s most popular characters came to become best friends. Of course, it would be boring if they were buddy-buddy from the get-go, so Sullivan and Mike start off as college rivals. It’s filled with plenty of references to old college movies that parents will get a chuckle out of and plenty of adorable new monsters. However, it lacks that certain something that made Monsters, Inc so good. Namely, it doesn’t have a Boo.

18. Cars

Pixar movies
Finally a movie for redneck kids!

This is the last time you’ll get to hear me complain about Cars on this Pixar movies list. The first Cars was a movie about learning humility and knowing that even if you’re the best, there’s always someone out there better than you. Because of this, Lightning McQueen is probably the least easily accessible character from Pixar. It doesn’t help that Owen Wilson is a lot more tolerable in small bursts, but there’s another good reason why Cars is my least favorite franchise on this list and Milhouse from The Simpsons summed it up best, “If gasoline is their food, then why do they have teeth?”

17. Brave

Pixar movies
Pixar’s only Disney princess.

Honestly, Brave feels a lot more like a Disney movie than a Pixar movie. Mostly because it’s the only Pixar film to have a princess as a protagonist. Sure, Merida isn’t like a lot of the other Disney Princesses, but she finds herself in essentially the same situation they do. Disappointed that she isn’t getting the respect she deserves because of her gender, she runs away and ends up getting involved with a witch and cursing her family. In typical fairy tale fashion, she has to learn a valuable life lesson in order to save herself and her family from a terrible fate.

16. Incredibles 2

Pixar
It might be as incredible as the first one, but it’s still pretty good.

Comic book geeks have been waiting for years to see the follow-up to Pixar’s first film about its own superpowered family. This time around the film tackles gender roles as Mr. Incredible finds himself in the role of stay-at-home dad while his wife goes out to fight crime. It might not live up to the original The Incredibles, but it’s definitely one of the better sequels Pixar has made over the years, and here’s hoping it turns into a full-blown franchise like Cars and Toy Story.
