The 2018 Stars & Popcorn Movie Awards

2018 Movie Superlatives

Biggest Badass: Lorie Strode- Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween)

Not so tough now, are you Michael?

If there’s one character who under went one hell ofa transformation this year it was Lorie Strode. In the first two Halloween films she was a hapless babe, fleeing for her life from a masked killer. This year though she brought the fight to Michael as it was revealed that she spent years after that terrifying night preparing for a rematch. Lorie went from a scream queen to a full-on badass as she barreled down on her demented brother. She is the perfect example of the hunted becoming the hunter.

Runner-Up: Domino- Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2)
She’s just along for the ride.

Deadpool said it himself, Domino is a bit of a badass. Even with all of X-Force down she came through in the clutch thanks to her OP good luck. I can’t wait to see her in X-Force.

Most Underrated Film of the Year: Venom

He’s a saucy flirt.

Hey, I know that Venom wasn’t a perfect film, but that doesn’t mean it needed to be ripped to shreds by critics like that. In fact, audiences around the world seemed to really enjoy the movie, which led to it raking in over $800 million at the box office. Most of the problems with the film are the same ones we’ve been seeing in Marvel movies for years, but that didn’t stop critics from raving about how great they were. It wasn’t a “good” movie, but it was a fun one and I think maybe critics just didn’t get it.

Runner-Up: Upgrade
Fingers crossed for a sequel.

While I’ve given this movie some pretty big props this year, it hasn’t gotten the recognition it truly deserves. This is definitely a movie you’ll want to check out!

Most Overrated Film of the Year: Mandy

I just don’t get it.

The internet was ablaze with admiration for Mandy. So much so that I couldn’t wait to sit down and see it myself. When the time came I eagerly gathered my popcorn and sat quietly taking it all in. When the final credits rolled I was filled with confusion. This couldn’t be the movie everyone was raving about. Did I miss something? Alas no. It would seem that the people whole love Mandy are the same people who love murals on their vans. It’s a fun novelty, but don’t put it on a pedastal.

Runner-Up: (Tie) The Hate You Give and A Star is Born
Not bad movies, but definitely not worth the admiration.

While neither of these films was bad, the amount of admiration and marketing they received ended up annoying me more than anything else.

Best Action Sequences: The Convoy Sequence (Deadpool 2)

X-Force!

If you want to see the runner-up badass of the year at her best, this is the scene to do it. Deadpool goes after Cable in order to save a young mutant with an elite team of mutants. Unfortunately, most of his team is taken out by a wind advisory, but even with the chips down, Deadpool and Domino manage to pull off an impossible mission by taking out an armed convoy and stopping a cranky old man with a Winter Soldier arm. It’s easily the best action scene in all of Deadpool 2.

Runner-Up: The Helicopter Chase (Mission: Impossible- Fallout)
Good luck catching Superman with that thing.

Tiny Tom Cruise chases after former Superman, Henrey Cavill with the fate of the planet in the balance. Just to raise the stakes, the whole thing takes place in helicopters.
