The Top 10 Best Movie Cyborgs
These Movie Cyborgs are a Perfect Blend of Man and Machine
Cyborgs are a classic element of science fiction. There’s just something awe-inspiring about the melding of man and machine that can either be super cool or incredibly terrifying. Hollywood has a long tradition of upgrading heroes and villains with the latest tech to make them larger than life. While some characters might undergo these changes willingly there are also those that are forced to give up bits of their humanity to survive. That’s why this week I’m taking a crack at the Top 10 Movie Cyborgs. Of course, before we get started I have to clarify a few things first.
Any nerd will tell you that cyborgs are humans that are augmented with technology. That means robots that look like humans (androids) don’t count. That also means that biologically engineered organisms don’t count either. So, you won’t be seeing any T-800’s from Terminator or Replicants from Blade Runner. Still, there are a ton of cyborgs to choose from throughout movie history.
With all the cool technology advances coming out these days, cyborgs are just around the corner. In fact, some very basic versions of them walk among us today. Though they’re not nearly as cool as the characters from this list. So, before you consider that upgrade, take a look at some of the more famous cyborgs that have graced the silver screen. As always, be sure to leave your thoughts and comments on the choices that made this list.
10. Bucky Barnes- The MCU
Good old Bucky Barnes. Just your typical all American lad that signed up to serve his country when they needed him most. Things went south during his tour of duty in WWII though and after an accident, during a mission, he found himself the property of Mother Russia. They slapped a metal arm on him and brainwashed him into becoming the perfect assassin that they could pack on ice and thaw out as needed. Now, metal arms seem to be a pretty popular choice when it comes to cyborgs, but what makes Bucky so special is that his upgrade allowed him to go toe to toe with Captain America. The hero who fought terrorists, robots, and even gods, struggled to take on a guy with a metal arm. Of course, the Russian knock-off super-soldier serum they pumped into him probably helped. While Bucky eventually ended up losing that arm, he was given an upgrade by the Wakandans just in time for the events of Infinity War, which put him right back in the fight.
9. Brixton Lore- Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
Idris Elba takes a turn playing the villain in the spin-off film, Hobbs & Shaw. Of course, this means he’s going toe to toe with the likes of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, which puts him a little out of his weight class. That is until it’s revealed that he’s a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier. As if incredible strength, speed, and dexterity weren’t enough, Brixton also has the ability to analyze his surroundings to the point where he can see exactly where your punch is going to land before you even throw it. This gives him quite the advantage and he spends half the film pummeling two of the biggest action stars on the planet. It also gives his character plenty of excuses to pull off physic and logic-defying stunts as he tracks his prey across the globe.
8. Max Da Costa- Elysium
Max’s exoskeleton actually made an appearance on Stars & Popcorn’s Top 10 Movie Mecha list a few weeks ago. The thing is that the exoskeleton isn’t so much something you can put on and take off. In order for Max to use it, they had to attach it to his bones and implant a CPU in his head so that he could control it. That makes him worthy to be one of the cyborgs on this list in my book. While his upgrades didn’t replace a body part, they allowed him to keep on moving while he was dying from radiation poisoning. When his body wanted to give up, the exoskeleton allowed him to pull a whole mind over matter thing. Of course, his suit didn’t just allow him to run, skip, and play. It gave him the ability to take on androids and mercenaries that stood between him and the tech that could save his life. Max’s upgrades gave him the power to push himself till the end and that’s why he’s on this list.
7. Cable- Deadpool 2
One of the more recent characters to join this list found his way onto the big screen this year. Cable comes from the future and has the metal arm and robo-eye to prove it. Marvel definitely has a thing for metal arms when it comes to their characters (Bucky Barnes, Misty Knight, Forge…) but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. While Bucky’s arm gave him the ability to punch really hard, Cable had a few more tricks tucked up his, well, sleeve. His arm lets him create a force field to deflect bullets, super strength, and even created magnetic fields. While audiences haven’t gotten a chance to really check out the upgrades the Winter Soldier got, I’m thinking Cable’s arm his version 10.0 of his. Plus it’s not attached to the strong silent type, more the strong, always pissed off type.
6. Grace- Terminator: Dark Fate
There are a lot of tough movie cyborgs on this list, but none of them were created to go up against the most dangerous androids in movie history. Grace comes from a future where humanity is being hunted to extinction by an evil AI controlling terminators. To give mankind a fighting chance, Grace volunteers to become an augmented human giving her enhanced strength, speed, durability, and a system that allows her to predict attacks simulating superhuman reflexes. She’s a brutally efficient combatant going straight for the kill whenever she clashes with the evil androids. They’re tough though, so sometimes Grace just has to settle for maiming them. Still, when the fate of mankind hangs in the balance, the resistance puts their trust in Grace to protect their savior and save the future.
