The Top 10 Best Vampire Movies
5. Blade II
Before Black Panther was making waves in theaters for being one of the first black superheroes to get his own film, Blade had a full-blown trilogy under his belt. While the first Blade was a pretty awesome, the sequel directed by Guillermo del Toro is one of the all-time best vampire movies out there. I mean, the Underworld franchise was all well and good, but I think they owe a lot of what made it work to the visuals and concepts explored in Blade II. Wesley Snipes is at the top of his game as the hybrid vampire slayer who has to team up with his sworn enemies to take on a new threat. Blade II not only inspired a slew of action vampire movies but it also clearly had an impact on the creation of del Toro’s tv series, The Strain.
4. From Dusk Till Dawn
Rebel director Robert Rodriguez is inspiring to say the least. He founded his first film by volunteering for medical experiments and eventually went on to make his very own film studio where he makes what he wants when he wants. As far as this list is concerned though, we’re going to focus on his contributions to vampire movies. From Dusk Till Dawn stars George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino as two criminal brothers on the run from the law. They end up hiding out in a strip club just south of the border. Unfortunately for them, it happens to be a hang out for vampires and they soon find themselves outnumbered by bloodsuckers. These bandits though aren’t going down without a fight though and luckily for them, they just have to hold out until dawn.
3. Thirst
Thirst is easily one of the most bizarre vampire movies I’ve seen in recent years and of course, it’s from Korea. While Korea might be famous for its revenge movies, this vampire flick proves that their film industry is far from being a one-trick pony. In fact, it’s actually from one of their greatest revenge director’s, Chan-wook Park. The film is about a Priest who undergoes becomes a vampire after a medical experiment and is forced to reconcile what he has become. Thirst is far more than that as the Priest struggles to survive while remaining true to his faith, he starts down a path that starts to spiral out of control and soon it becomes clear that he’s not the monster of this story after all. Thirst definitely offers a unique twist on vampire lore and is absolutely haunting.
2. Only Lovers Left Alive
Tom Hiddleston might be best known as one of the greatest villains in the MCU, but in Only Lovers Left Alive he reminds us all that he’s so much more than Loki. While a lot of vampire movies are about fierce blood starved monsters of the night, this film takes a more practical look at these creatures. In it, Hiddleston is a vampire who has lived for centuries and finds comfort in music. In fact, he spends most of his nights writing and recording music that has developed quite a following. However, he’s depressed more than anything and suffers from deep loneliness. In order to cure his ennui, he decides to reconnect with an old flame and the two find comfort once more in each other’s arms. This is a far cry from the type of abusive relationships you see in so many vampire movies, and it’s definitely one of the more unique films on this list. I wholeheartedly suggest it if you’re looking for something a little different.
1. Let the Right One In/ Let Me In
When it comes to the number one entry on this vampire movies list, you really can’t go wrong with the original or the American remake. Both of them are dark and deeply chilling movies that will stay with you long after you’ve finished watching them. Essentially the films are about a young boy who finds himself in a blossoming romance with a young girl who moved into his apartment complex. Young love is always complicated though and in this case even more so since the girl is a vampire. As the film goes on it becomes clear just how terrifying a child with that kind of power can be. The brutal animalistic instincts that come with being a vampire paired with a child’s lack of self-control make her a terrifying force of nature. More than anything though, this is a love story. It just so happens to be a really dark and twisted one.
Now I’m sure there are plenty of vampire movies that you would have loved to have seen on this list. It took me forever to narrow my list down to these ten movies and even then some of the last few cuts were gut-wrenching. So, be sure to comment below what vampire movies are your favorite. As always, this list will be updated as new great vampire movies make their way to the silver screen. So, be sure to check back regularly to see what new movies you should check out!
