The Top 10 Best Workplace Comedies
5. The Hudsucker Proxy
You know, for kids! The Hudsucker Proxy is one of the Coen brothers best films and that might have something to do with the fact that Sam Raimi wrote the script with them. The film follows an idiot from the mailroom is used to replace the recently deceased president of Hudsucker industries. While he might just be a figurehead, he manages to make a giant splash with his incredible invention. On second thought “incredible” might not be the right word for it. It’s a hilarious movie that wanders through the odd world of 1930’s industry. Tim Robbins turns in one of his best performances since The Shawshank Redemption, and it’s a must-see for anyone who thinks that the management at their company has no idea what they’re doing.
4. Sorry to Bother You
One of the best movies of 2018 easily earns a spot on this list of workplace comedies. Director Boots Riley explores the almost prison-like system we all live by in America. Being forced to work menial jobs in order to barely survive can be soul-crushing and Sorry to Bother You captures just how far you have to go in order to make it. The film follows a young man who finds himself taking a job that forces its employees to pretty much sell their souls in order to succeed. Unfortunately, he manages to find his “voice” and soon finds that success leads to a strange tumble down the rabbit hole of corporate America. It’s a surreal comedy with plenty of social commentary and well worth seeing if you haven’t yet.
3. Clerks
Kevin Smith burst onto the scene with this darkly comedic film. We’ve seen a lot of workplace comedies on this list that require suits and ties, but Clerks will remind every one of their first jobs. In it, lovable losers navigate a day in the life of invisible workers. We’re talking about the cashiers at the convenience stores, those fast food drive-thru workers, even janitors. They’re all employees barely scraping by and barely get treated by humans by the people they serve. That doesn’t stop them from getting into their own adventures to pass the time and sometimes their lives are more interesting than the CEO’s. If you’re just trying to get by, you’re going to want to make sure you check out this modern classic.
2. Modern Times
Have to go old school for one of these workplace comedies. After all, I did go to school for film and that means something… I guess. Modern Times is a Charlie Chaplin classic that took place during a time when everyone was struggling to put food on the table. It was also a time when OSHA standards weren’t a thing, union busting was a legitimate career path, and most factory workers were in elementary school. Of course, none of that really matters in the end because Charlie Chaplin manages to make it all ok with his physical humor. I’m sure there are lots of people out there who aren’t fans of black and white silent films, but this is one that will make you feel a bit better about going to work on Monday.
1. Office Space
It would not have been possible to make a legitimate Top 10 Workplace Comedies list without including this cult classic. It’s a film that has managed to entertain a generation more than it probably should, and yet we can’t stop watching it. While a lot of people might be big Beavis and Butt-Head, this is the film that made me fall in love with Mike Judge. If you’re a fan of his Silicon Valley series, then this is a movie that will definitely speak to you. Let’s face it, most of us are stuck in jobs we hate but can’t leave and this is a movie that gets it. If you work in a cubicle, get called in on a Saturday, or deal with TPS reports, then you need to check out this modern classic.
