The Top 10 Greatest Movie Rock Bands
These Are 10 Movie Rock Bands You’ll Wish You Could Catch on Tour!
I might be a huge fan of movies, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t know how to rock. That’s why this week I’m taking a look at the greatest rock bands to grace the silver screen. Of course, I’m talking about totally fictional bands that I would have loved to have caught on tour. Alas, I might never get that chance, but I can always catch them on the big screen whenever I’m feeling nostalgic. The only rules were that the entries had to be actual bands (no solo acts) and they have to have appeared in movies. I tried my best to stay away from real bands, but at the end of the day, a lot of these bands have some real talent behind them. From having their music written by real-life rock stars to consisting of some actual musicians with some real talent, each of these bands managed to battle their way onto this list. So slap on some headphones and get ready to rock, this Top 10 list is a real chart-topper.
10. Hong Kong Cavaliers- The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension
How could you not want to see the Hong Kong Cavaliers in concert? The lead singer is Buckaroo Banzai a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock musician. Talk about a serious renaissance man. The thing is the rest of the Hong Kong Cavaliers all have resumes just as impressive as their lead singer, which makes them not only a band but also the last hope for humanity. While we don’t really get to see the band in action, the fact that Banzai is so good at everything else makes me think that they’re probably one of the greatest rock bands to ever appear on the silver screen. As far as movie rock bands go, they’re a little OP but in such an absurd way that I can’t even begin to imagine how amazing their discography could have been…
9. Steel Dragon- Rockstar
When we meet Steel Dragon on the big screen things aren’t looking too good for them. While a lot of movie rock bands go through rough patches but Rockstar is all about a rough patch. At the center of the story is Chris “Izzy” Cole, a tribute singer who ends up joining the band when they have to fire their own lead singer. The thing is that fame is a deal with the devil in its own right and soon Chris learns the price that comes with it. Unfortunately, if they were real I’m sure they would have faded into obscurity years ago, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t mind jamming out to a playlist featuring their music every once in a while. Plus, I’m sure it would be interesting to see where Chris Cole ended up after parting ways with the band. That’s a guy with a future.
8. The Soggy Bottom Boys- O Brother, Where Art Thou?
So they’re not exactly a “Rock Band” but there hit Man of Constant Sorrow was so good that it took on a new life of its own after the movie. Of course, real life popularity doesn’t have any business when it comes to movie rock bands, but it doesn’t hurt. The thing is that we’ll probably never get a follow up song from the group since their meeting and subsequent recording was done out of necessity, so there’s no way of telling if they were a one hit wonder or not. Still, it’s hard to argue with their popularity both on and off the screen. I’d like to think that this odd quartet could have been one of the biggest bands in history. Plus, they might just have the best name of all the rock bands that manages to earn a spot on this list.
7. Crucial Taunt- Wayne’s World
I’m going to be real here, the only reason Crucial Taunt managed to make it on this list of rock bands is because of Cassandra Wong. I mean, the girl is a total babe. If she were a president she would be Babe-raham Lincoln. Of course, being a babe doesn’t make you talented (as so many actual singers who tried to make it on the big screen have found out), but Crucial Taunt actually has some pretty catchy tunes and I found myself humming Ballroom Blitz and Why You Wanna Break My Heart long after the credits ran. There’s a reason why Wayne Campbell, a total music fanatic, fell for Cassandra and it’s the same reason why Crucial Taunt is getting a shout out on this list. Their lead singer is a dangerous combination of beauty and talent.
6. Stillwater- Almost Famous
An amalgam based on Poco, the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stillwater is the kind of band I could really get into. In the film Almost Famous they’re a group that embodies the romanticized idea of a band on the rise. Not quite big enough to headline their own shows, but a group that is a perfect opening act. Just like Steel Dragon though fame proves too much for them and soon the members of Stillwater find themselves in conflict with one another thanks to their egos. They’re far from a perfect group of people, but then again that’s kind of typical among even the best bands in the world. The fact that they’re real humans with real problems means that their music comes from the heart.
