10 Upcoming New Movies to Get Excited About in 2020
2019 has come and gone, which means it’s time to look to the future and start getting excited about the new movies heading our way in 2020. There are already hundreds of movies slated for release in the new year, but I decided to dig through them all and pull together a list of the 10 new movies that I’m looking forward to the most in 2020. I’ve got a few personal biases when it comes to the movies that I tend to anticipate, so I decided to try to come up with a well-rounded list with a variety of different genres from animated to horror to sci-fi to comedy. It was tough to narrow it down to just 10 movies with so many incredible films that are slated for release. The movies that earned a spot are listed strictly by release date and not ranked in any way. Hopefully, I’ve managed to make some pretty accurate predictions for the upcoming year, and I’d love to hear what new movies you’re looking forward to the most as well. So, be sure to leave a comment below.
Onward – March 6th
Pixar’s next film is a road trip film set in a world of fantasy. Marvel alumni Tom Holland and Chris Pratt lend their voices as two brothers trying to rediscover magic in a world that seems to have lost touch thanks to technology. The trailer seems like a delightfully twisted time with feral unicorns, pet dragons, and elves. I won’t say that Pixar has always made perfect movies, but they’ve proven to be reliable enough for me to get excited about Onward. Besides, we’ve never seen them tackle fantasy elements like this before, and I’m interested to see what they do with them. As if one Pixar film wasn’t enough, they’ve got a second movie, Soul, also set for release a few months later. As far as animated films go, Onward is one of the new movies I’m looking forward to the most.
No Time to Die – April 8th
Daniel Craig is appearing as James Bond one last time. Now, we can sit here and argue about who the best Bond of all time, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Craig has been a damn good 007. All good things come to an end though, and I’m hoping that he gets the send off he deserves in his final film. There were rumors of problems on the set, but it looks like they managed to finish up and the recent trailer looks pretty good. Carey Fukunaga is one of the last people I would have expected to direct a Bond film, but I’m intrigued at what he can bring to the super spies legacy given his past work on things like Maniac and True Detective. I hope he brings his thought-provoking aesthetic to it.
Fast & Furious 9 – May 22nd
Hey, I know that the Fast & Furious films aren’t exactly high art. In fact, I saw them as a joke up until Fast Five when the franchise switched gears and started getting interesting. Since then, they’ve turned into over-the-top action films with some of the biggest and toughest names in Hollywood appearing in them. [They OR if it is Fast Five than say Fast Five] even inspired the 2018 spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. The biggest news is that director Justin Lin is returning to the franchise. He’s been a little hit and miss in the past, but now the franchise is a machine that doesn’t need much to ensure it keeps going. Of the new movies hitting theaters in 2020, this is the over-the-top action film I’m looking forward to the most.
Candyman – June 12th
Of course, I’m excited about the new Jourdan Peele movie. His past films, Get Out and Us were absolutely brilliant and he’s established himself as one of the most insightful up and coming horror directors in the industry. However, I’m also a little hesitant because it’s a remake of Candyman and, while the films are iconic, they’re not exactly good. Hopefully, Peele will abandon the cumbersome sexuality that saturates the story, focus on the social aspects of it, and pump up the horror to 11. To be perfectly honest, horror remakes are dangerous territory, and I hope he manages to make it past the toxic parts of horror fandom unscathed. Either way, I’m going to be standing in line opening night for this one
