5 New Movies to Look Forward to In December 2018

2018 is on the Way Out, but Not Without Giving Us a Few New Movies to Look Forward to.

Things are winding down and December is the last month to look forward to new movies in 2018. Luckily, there are a ton of films that look like they’re going to be damn good coming to theaters this month (and in some cases getting wide releases), which means this was the hardest New Movies article to put together of the entire year. December looks to have something for everyone from biopics to superheroes to adaptations of beloved novels. Of course, with the holidays in full swing, it might be a little hard to sneak away from family obligations to catch some of these great new movies, but you can count on Stars & Popcorn to let you know just which ones are worth it. Until the reviews drop, here are the 5 new movies I’m looking forward to the most this month!

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse– December 14th

We’ve had some damn good animated movies this year and some truly great superhero movies, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse might just be the best of both worlds. The film takes an animated approach to everyone’s favorite web-slinger and even introduces a few of his counterparts from alternate universes (Marvel loves them some alternate universes). Most importantly though it’s bringing a relatively new superhero to the big screen in the form of Miles Morales, a bi-racial web-slinger who has given a lot of kids a hero to look up to and admire. I’ve been looking forward to this film since the mid-credit trailer in Venom and I hope it proves to be well worth the wait.

Mortal Engines– December 14th

Peter Jackson is back in the director’s chair! Oddly enough though he’s not adapting J.R.R. Tolkien‘s work this time. Instead, he’s switch authors to Phillip Reeve who wrote the Mortal Engines novels. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which a war ravaged the earth and forced cities to move into the air and onto the sea. Those that say on the land became mobile empires rolling across the Earth in search of resources. It’s an interesting premise and the effects look absolutely incredible. Jackson has proved more than capable when it comes to bringing impossibly epic stories to the big screen, so there’s not much room to doubt that this will be a truly incredible movie and one worthy of seeing on the biggest screen possible.

Aquaman– December 21st

People talk a lot of trash about the DC cinematic universe, but if there’s one thing fans agreed on from Justice League it’s that Jason Momoa made for a pretty incredible Aquaman. Early reviews have been positive, but I trust most other critics about as far as I can throw them. However, the IMAX trailer that was recently released sold me on this big screen adventure featuring the King of the Seven Screens. I bought my tickets early and couldn’t be more excited to see if it even lives up to a fraction of the hype it’s been getting recently. Of course, there have been some epic Marvel movies this year too, but I’m hoping that Aquaman will get DC back on the right track to give Marvel a run for its money.

Welcome to Marwen– December 21st

Steve Carrell has come a long way since playing secondhand shame king Michael Scott on The Office. These days he’s gotten a bit more serious with the roles he’s taken on and I definitely don’t mind given how good Beautiful Boy and Last Flag Flying were. Welcome to Marwen pairs him with the director of Forrest Gump to tell the tale of an artist recovering from a vicious attack that left him brutalized and suffering from PTSD. The premise definitely sounds heavy, but the trailer portrays his healing process as beautiful and fanciful. Personally, I’m willing to be that this will be a film that will tug at my heartstrings and bring a tear to my eye, neither of which is ever a bad thing. If you’re looking for an end of the year movie with stars and popcorn, this just might be it.

Vice– December 28th

A late entry into the last stretch of the Awards Season race is a film that feels oddly relevant given the media circus we’re continuously watching unfold with the Trump administration. This one though focuses on one of the most infamous vice presidents of all time, Dick Cheney. The film is from Adam McKay of Funny or Die fame and features a slew of A-list actors from Christian Bale to Amy Adams to even Steve Carrell. I was never a huge fan of the guy while he was in office, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be excited to see McKay’s (hopefully) comedic take on a man who played a significant part in shaping the modern world and politics in general. Fingers crossed that this won’t be a movie that causes horrible flashbacks to Bush’s more infamous gaffs

As I said, there are a ton of truly great looking new movies coming to theaters in December. These are just a few that I’m going to be standing in line for opening night, but I want to hear which ones you’re the most excited to see. As always, Stars & Popcorn will be posting timely reviews for these films and the ones you mention int he comments will be sure to get first priority. Until then, enjoy the last month of new movies 2018 has to offer. I’m sure it’ll be a great one!
