5 New Movies to Look Forward to In June 2018

So far this year, June looks like it’s going to be one of the best months for new movies of 2018. Sure you’ve had your Infinity Wars and your Deadpool 2s, but overall June looks like it’s got more choices than you can shake a stick at. That makes sense though since it’s the start of the madness that is the summer season at theaters. Narrowing it down to just five films to get excited about though proved to be difficult and I had to cast aside the likes of Ocean’s 8 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The new movies that did make the list though offer an eclectic blend with something for everyone. Here’s hoping that these flicks are as good as they look, but you can always check back for the reviews on Stars & Popcorn.

Upgrade– June 1st, 2018

This is one of those new movies that completely snuck up on me. Before a few weeks ago, I had never heard of Upgrade until a friend came barging in and demanded I check out the trailer. I have to say it looks spectacular. Like one of those science fiction films that relies more on concepts that a big budget. The premise is that an operating system helps a paralyzed man to walk again… And then helps him get revenge on the people that paralyzed him in the first place. The trailer sold me on this flick, but when I dived a little bit deeper into the credits behind it I have to admit that there’s not a lot to go on as far as track records. However, it does make me a bit uncomfortable that Blumhouse is throwing its name on there to appease audiences. Almost reminds me of Truth or Dare

Hereditary– June 8th, 2018

This year I keep holding out hopes for a great horror flick, but the new movies have been a little disappointing. The Strangers: Prey at Night was found lacking, Insidious: The Last Key was a joke, and Bad Samaritan was disappointing, to say the least. However, Hereditary looks like it might be just what the horror junkie inside of me is craving. The trailer looks absolutely insane and to be honest I have no idea what this movie is going to be about. That’s why I can’t wait to see what this film has in store for me. I’m intrigued, to say the least, even though it looks like it might have one of the creepiest kids I’ve seen on the big screen in a long time. Still, if that adds to the horror element I’ll be happy to put aside my distaste for creepy children.

Hotel Artemis– June 8th, 2018

There are some new movies that you know aren’t going to be that good, but then again not all great movies are good. Hotel Artemis looks like a twisted version of The Raid or Dredd, except this time it’s the bad guys fighting their way to the very top. Seems like quite the mindless action flick, but then again it stars the likes of Sophia Boutella, Dave Bautista, Jeff Goldblum, and Jodie Foster. Plus the first time feature director has written some pretty awesome action movies in the past. That’s why I’m excited to see what this over the top violent feature has in store for audiences. It’ll be nice to take a break from everything and just watch a good old fashioned shoot ‘em up. Like I said, this movie doesn’t look good, it looks spectacular in all the best possible ways.

Incredibles 2– June 15th, 2018

The smart money says that this is going to be the Academy Award-winning animated feature for 2018. The only real competition it has as of now is Isle of Dogs and as fun, as that was, it’s not going to stand much of a chance against the juggernaut that is Pixar. It might seem like I’m making a lot of assumptions when it comes to Incredibles 2, but Pixar has storytelling down to an art form and Incredibles is still one of my favorite movies in their catalog to date. That’s why I’ve already bought my ticket to see this and if you haven’t done so, you better get on it. As great as June looks for new movies, I’m willing to be that Incredibles 2 will be the best of the month. Now I just have to hope that Pixar doesn’t embarrass me with another Cars 2.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado– June 29th, 2018

Taylor Sheridan blew me away with his American Frontier trilogy which included Hell or High Water, Sicario, and Wind River. So, I’m incredibly excited to see what he has in store for us with the sequel to Sicario. Benicio Del Toro was a force of nature in the original and Josh Brolin has had a pretty awesome year in theaters (See Infinity War and Deadpool 2). This time it looks like things are going to be taken to the next level with the war on the Mexican drug cartels and might even lead to a showdown between Brolin and Del Toro. As far as I’m concerned this one looks like it could be the perfect blend of both stars and popcorn and I’ve been counting down the days until it hits theaters. Good thing I don’t have much longer to wait.

Like I said before, June looks like an incredible month for new movies. There are a ton of others coming out, but these are the five that Stars & Popcorn is looking forward to the most. Of course, I’d love to hear which movies you’re the most excited to see. So leave a comment below and let me know so I can make sure I get to theaters to review them.
