5 New Movies to Look Forward to In October 2018
We’re entering the last quarter of 2018, but that doesn’t mean we’re running out of movies to be excited for! This month we’ve got everything from a superhero movie to a couple of Oscar contenders with their eyes on the prize. October looks like it’s going to be quite the blend of stars and popcorn movies. With so many coming out though and movie tickets costing a pretty penny, how are you going to choose what new movies are going to be worth it? As always I put together a handy list of movies to look forward to this month, and you can always check out the new reviews as they come out. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the 5 new movies you should be excited about this month!
Venom (October 5th)
To be honest, I’m a little disappointed that Sony didn’t go for the hard R for Venom. I mean, it worked out pretty well for Fox with Logan and Deadpool. Still, this far into the year, I’ll take my superhero movies where I can get ‘em. Tom Hardy has done right by me in the past when it comes to superhero movies so I might be a little more optimistic than I should be about this film. That being said, there are a few things I’m a little iffy on. I’m hoping that the visual effects are a bit more refined and they finally found someone who knows how to pronounce “symbiote” correctly. Either way, I’m going to be sitting in this movie on opening night and no matter what this will definitely be better than Spider-Man 3.
A Star is Born (October 5th)
Of all the new movies coming out in October, A Star is Born has been the most annoying with its advertising. I’m not completely sold on this, but Lady Gaga was pretty good in American Horror Story, and Bradley Cooper is moving from on the camera to behind it. So, I am genuinely intrigued by A Star is Born. At first glance, it looks like it has all the ingredients to pull out a few potential Oscar nominations (I’m willing to bet money on a Best Original Song nod). On the other hand, everything could go so wrong with this movie. I mean, I’m barely tolerating the ads at this point! However, that’s all part of the fun when it comes to this movie though. Will I hate it? Will I not? Who knows! Read the review to find out.
First Man (October 12th)
Smell that in the air? That, my friends, is the smell of Awards Season bait. While A Star is Born looks like it might have some potential to rack up a few awards, First Man is swinging for the fences. Ryan Gosling is no stranger to powerhouse roles and this is a story that shouldn’t “divide” audiences. In the turmoil that is America, it’s going to be nice to see a film that celebrates some of the good things we’ve done. However, I’ll be a little upset if the likes of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson don’t make an appearance in the film and it’s just a bunch of white guys with crew cuts and pocket protectors. Either way, I don’t think this is going to be one of those new movies that are fun, but it should be a good one.
Bad Times at the El Royale (October 12th)
Of all the new movies coming out in October, this is the one that I’m the most excited about. I’m a big fan of Drew Goddard as a writer and loved the last feature film he directed (Cabin in the Woods), so the fact that he’s pulling double duty on what looks like the most exciting thriller of 2018 has me giddy with anticipation. Toss in the fact that it has an all-star cast with the likes of Jeff Daniels, Chris Hemsworth, and Nick Offerman means that I’m willing to be that this will be one of the best films of the last quarter of 2018. Bad Times at the El Royale looks like it’s only going to be a good time at the theaters and I can’t wait to see it. That being said, I’ve got high expectations for it, which means I could also be a tremendous let down if it doesn’t meet them.
Halloween (October 19th)
I know what you’re thinking: “Great, another entry into a horror franchise that refuses to die.” The thing is that this new Halloween film has gotten some incredible buzz over the past few weeks. So much so that this might very well be the best horror movie of 2018 (though Nicolas Cage’s Mandy is getting incredible buzz as well). I was always more of a Friday the 13th kind of guy, but Michael Myers is like Jason in a lot of ways, so I’m willing to change teams for this flick. The best part is that this movie is actually hitting theaters just before the actual holiday. That means that I know how I’ll be getting into a spooktacular mood for Halloween this year! Either way, I’m expecting this to be a pretty standard horror film releasing at just the right time of year.
This month’s new movies are looking a little more promising than last months, but only time will tell. However, I want to hear what movies you’re looking forward to this month. Leave a comment below letting me know not just what movies you think will be great but the ones you think are going to be awful.
