5 New Movies to Look Forward to In August 2019

August Has Plenty of New Movies to Be Excited About!

July wasn’t a half bad month for new movies. However, with a new month comes new releases and I have to say that August isn’t looking too bad either. Sure, there are plenty of movies I’m not exactly excited to be seeing in theaters, but there are also a number that I can’t wait to see. From over the top action flicks to raunchy comedies to a few horror films that look terrifying, there’s a lot hitting the big screen this month. Not to worry though, because I put together a list of 5 movies I think are worth looking forward to this month. There’s no way to be certain, but looking over the cast, crew, and trailers for these movies has filled me with enough confidence to go on record saying that they look pretty damn good. So, take a look to see which new movies I’m most excited for this August!

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw– August 2nd

Jason Statham and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson are teaming up with the man responsible for Dead Pool 2 and (partly responsible for) John Wick to tackle the first, of what I assume will be many, Fast and Furious franchise spin-offs. If you’re not already begging for theaters to take your money so you can see this over the top looking ballet of violence on the big screen, I’m not sure what to tell you. I know that this movie is going to be good. I can feel it in my jellies. If you’re still on the fence, why don’t I toss in the fact that Idris Elba is going to be playing a cybernetically enhanced supervillain in the movie? On paper, it looks like it might be just too extreme to work, but the trailer completely sells me on it.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark– August 9th

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a stable of my childhood. I used to check those books out of the library on an almost weekly basis just so I could hide under the covers and read them with a flashlight. They were pretty spooky all on their own, but now horror aficionado Guillermo del Toro is bringing it to the big screen. He might not be directing, but he’s done really great work as a producer before and the trailer makes this look just as intense as the stories always did in my head as a kid. It’s amazing to me that the movie only earned a PG rating since it looks like full-on nightmare fuel. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing a piece of my childhood in theaters.

Good Boys– August 16th

Seth Rogen has earned a reputation as a producer for coming damn close to pushing things too far at times. Preacher and The Boys are just two series he’s done that simply don’t give a damn about boundaries or playing it safe. Good Boys looks like it’s going to be just like his other works and I simply can’t wait. The film features some innocent-looking child stars (all in their tweens) that end up getting in way over their heads and into some NSFW situations. The trailer alone has cracked me up every time I’ve seen it and I wholeheartedly believe that this is going to be one of the best comedies of the year, which is saying something since we’ve had some pretty incredible comedies so far.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged– August 16th

I love shark movies. Hell, I love pretty much all killer animal movies. Last month, Crawl reinvigorated my mild (but totally under control) obsession with the horror sub-genre. However, I need more! I actually was really impressed with the first 47 Meters Down and found it to be an edge of your seat thriller. While the actors might not be back for a second round (see the first movie to find out why…), director Johannes Roberts is back to take another plunge into the deep. This time around the characters get trapped inside some underwater ruins instead of a shark cage, which is just another reminder that spelunking and similar hobbies are just asking for trouble.

Ready or Not– August 23rd

One of my favorite genres is horror-comedy. Movies like Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Gravy, and Blood Sucking Bastards mix humor with just the right amount of blood to fill me with delight. So, when I saw the red band trailer for this movie, I marked it on my calendar instantly. The movie follows a new bride who finds out that the family she married into are not only board game tycoons, but also crazed cultist that believe that they have to sacrifice her in order to maintain their prosperity. The good news is they don’t look like they’re very good at the whole murder thing. I can’t wait to see this new movie featuring “the final girl” fighting back with everything she’s got. This movie looks like it will be right up my alley.

There are plenty of other great-looking movies coming out this August too. If there’s one you’re super excited for, leave a comment below to let me know. As always, I’ll be seeing and reviewing every movie I can this month. So, be sure to check back and see if these movies are worth the price of admission before running off to theaters.
