5 New Movies to Look Forward to In February 2019

January is Dead Which Means New Movies We Can Get Excited About

January is always a terrible month when it comes to new movies. February though, well, February can surprise you from time to time. This month seems like it’s got a lot to throw at audiences, especially when it comes to those looking for new movies that one might consider taking their sweetie to on Valentine’s day. Of course, romance movies have never been a soft spot when it comes to Stars & Popcorn, so don’t expect a lot of romantic comedies to make this month’s list of new movies to get excited about. Instead, we’ve got a ton of action movies, a few animated films, a survival flick, and even a long-awaited sequel to help you make it through the shortest month at the theaters. Now that you made it through the low point of 2019, we can start getting to the really good movies that will be hitting theaters this month!

Arctic- February 1st

Mads Mikkelsen earned a place in my heart after his brief appearance as Hannibal Lector in the short-lived series about the killer before he met agent Clarice Starling. This time around he plays a man battling for survival in a land where no one is meant to live. Director Joe Penna might not be a name I initially recognize, but that doesn’t mean I’m not excited to see this film play out. Sure I’m expecting plenty of frostbites, compound fractures, and other gruesome bits that comes with surviving a place people tend not to voluntarily live. Mikkelsen is an actor who has proven that he has the acting chops to carry a film on his own. The question is if Arctic is going to be a movie that has any popcorns to go with the inevitable star rating it’s going to earn.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part– February 8th

To be honest, I’m a little nervous about The Lego Movie 2. The first film was from the guys who also brought us Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was one of the best movies of 2018. However, this film swaps directors and writers for Mike Mitchell, who brought us movies like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Needless to say, my hope for this film has started to drain a little bit. That doesn’t mean I’m not excited, because the first movie managed to meet and exceed every expectation I could have had for it. Still, my expectations are a bit more tempered than they would be if  Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were returning to direct it. Either way, I’m still seeing this flick opening night.

Happy Death Day 2U– February 15th

One of the best surprises I came across when I first brought back Stars & Popcorn was Happy Death Day. It was such an incredibly delightful horror comedy, that I simply can’t help recommending it to everyone I come across. Best of all, this is one sequel that has the same writer/director returning to do it justice, Christopher Landon. While I’m not quite sure a sequel is necessary, I’m still excited to see what the twisted mind behind the original has in store for us. Hopefully, this revisit doesn’t ruin the gimmick that made the original so incredible. The trailer seems to suggest that the sequel will tap into and expand on what made me love the first one so much. Either way, I know what I’m going to to be doing Valentine’s day… Which is kinda sad, so let’s move on.

Alita: Battle Angel– February 15th

I’ve started to develop a love-hate relationship with Alita: Battle Angel. I was actually in the audience when James Cameron announced at Comic-Con that this was supposed to be his next film, but that was when I was a young man full of hope for the future of cinema. Then in 2018, this film made my list of most anticipated movies for the year before it was pushed back… Again. So, while I’m hopeful to see what Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have in store for audiences, I’m not holding my breath. Even though the release date for this film is right around the corner, I half expect it to be pulled out from other us. That being said, I am definitely getting advanced tickets to this film and will keep my fingers crossed that this will be the greatest live action anime adaptation of all time.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World– February 22nd

People love them some Hiccup when it comes to How to Train Your Dragon. I was never one to get too wrapped up in the series, but I will be the first to admit that I definitely have enjoyed the franchise to date. This third entry into the trilogy will probably be the first great animated film of 2019. Of course, there really isn’t much competition at this point. Still, it’s a remarkable trilogy and it’s had some beautiful animation up to this point. So, I’m pretty excited to see what (hopefully will be) the final chapter in this series. I’m legitimately looking forward to this movie, even if the villain is the same one from the Justice League. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World might just be the film that kicks off the flood of great movies for 2019.

February has a ton of other movies hitting theaters, so if there are some that you’re excited about, be sure to leave a comment below. I’ll be sure to review the ones you’re looking forward to the most, but I’ll need to know what they are. In the meantime, be sure to check back to see how the new movies of February fare, because there’s no other site that will give you the truth like Stars & Popcorn.
