5 New Movies to Look Forward to In February 2020

February is a month reserved for romance. That means there are lots of movies coming out that you can go and watch with your sweetie. Don’t worry if you’re single though, because there are plenty of movies hitting theaters that won’t feel awkward buying one ticket for. The month is actually looking pretty good, and it should be a welcome relief from the cinematic trash fire that January always is. February has a crazy assortment of movies hitting theaters, and most of the interesting ones are slated for Valentine’s Day weekend. Per usual, I threw together a list of 5 movies that we can all hopefully look forward to over the next month. Check it out,t and let me know what films you’re the most excited for in February.

Birds of Prey – February 7th

The DCEU has been picking up over the past few years and I’m hoping that Birds of Prey will continue the trend. The film features a collection of Femme Fatales from DC comics including Black Canary, Harley Quinn, Huntress, and a few more. Best of all, it’s being directed by a woman, Cathy Yan, so we won’t have to deal with a lot of that male gaze garbage. I was a little nervous since the trailers haven’t shown too much action in them, but I read that John Wick director Chad Stahelski consulted on the action scenes, and now I’m rip-roaring excited to see it. If you’re a fan of cinematic girl-power, you won’t want to miss this one, especially because the R-Rating should make room for lots of insanity

Sonic the Hedgehog – February 14th

So, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie started off a bit rough. Fan reactions to the CGI ended up delaying the film until the studio could improve it. Now, we could take that as a very bad sign or we could see it as the studio really wanting to make the fans happy. I’m going to choose the optimistic option because so many video game movies suck, and I’m really hoping that this will be a good one. The new trailer actually looks pretty good, and I have my fingers crossed that this will be a lighthearted adventure movie that I can enjoy while on my own while couples go off to see more romantic movies like The Photograph. Don’t worry, I’ll see and review that one too, but I’m much more excited about Sonic the Hedgehog.

Fantasy Island – February 14th

Speaking of romantic movies hitting theaters Valentine’s weekend, how about that Fantasy Island? Any horror fan will recognize the monkey paw concept from the trailer, but it’s a cliche because it works so damn well. Plus, even though Blumhouse makes bad movies every once in a while, I still really love the vast majority of the films that come out of the studio. The film is a twisted version of an old TV show in which people travel to an island to have their wildest fantasy brought to life. Keep your mind out of the gutter, because this was a series on public television. Taking that idea and adding a horror twist is exactly the kind of thing I can really sink my teeth into.

Downhill – February 21st

A remake of the foreign film Force Majeure, Downhill looks like an uncomfortably delightful film. I say “uncomfortably” because it’s the story of a family on vacation that thinks they’re facing an avalanche and the father runs away. Turns out it was nothing to be concerned with, but what do you do with that? I mean, you’re looking death in the eyes, and the love of your life just runs off and abandons you? Someone is going to be in the dog house… Well, probably until the divorce lawyers get through with him. Relationships are far from perfect, and I take a little bit of delight seeing movies that remind me that I’m not the only one who is terrible at them. I can’t wait to see how many idiots bring their Valentine’s date to Downhill, because I’m betting that it’s going to lead to a lot of “uncomfortable” conversations in the lobby.

The Invisible Man – February 28th

I was a huge fan of Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade and I’m delighted that he’s helming this reboot of the classic Universal movie monster, the Invisible Man. This film looks like it is really embracing the psychotic aspect of the character as it features an abusive genius who fakes his own death to get back at the woman who escaped him. It’s the ultimate gaslighting horror film as he set out to make her, and everyone around her, believe that she is insane. Upgrade was a very visually driven thriller, and I think that makes Whannell the perfect choice to tackle a villain who doesn’t actually “appear” for most of the film. I can’t wait to see what happens in this one.

As I said, there are a lot of cool-looking movies coming out this month and that’s good news for you movie geek love birds out there, but as I said, don’t feel too awkward if you’re single. I’ll be buying a ticket for one all month long. So, make sure you check back here to see all the reviews before you head off to theaters.
