5 New Movies to Look Forward to In July 2019

July Has Some Pretty Cool New Movies Hitting Theaters.

June has come and gone with more than it’s fair share of both good and bad movies. Now we’ turn our gaze to July to see if it has anything good in store for us. The good news is that July looks like it might be a pretty good month for movies. It’s got a super-hero flick, a live-action Disney remake, and even a few horror movies that look like they might be pretty good. I looked through everything hitting theaters this month and put together a list of the 5 movies I’m looking forward to. I’ve even added an honorable mention to the list since I’ve got my own biases towards a certain director that everyone seems to love. So, if you’re a movie buff balling on a budget, you’ll want to check out my picks for the 5 new movies you’ll want to check out this month.

Spider-Man: Far From Home– July 5th

Turns out the Endgame isn’t the final entry in the first chapter of the MCU. Apparently, Far From Home is going to wrap everything up post Endgame and introduce the MCU to multiverses. I was a huge fan of Homecoming and think it was probably one of the best movies of the MCU to date. Now we get to see the wall-crawler decide what kind of hero he’s going to be in a world without Iron Man as he finds himself recruited by Nick Furry to help save Europe with the help of… Mysterio? I’m not sure what this movie is trying to pull any good Spider-Man fan knows that Mysterio is a bad guy. So, what’s going on with him playing the hero in the trailer? I guess we’ll find out this month!

Midsommar– July 5th

Ari Aster freaked me right the @#$% out with his first film Hereditary. So, I’m hesitantly excited to see Midsommar this month. Not because I think it will be bad, but because I think it will be hard to watch. The film follows a woman who ends up going with her boyfriend to a festival in Sweden that turns out to be a cover for a pagan cult. Now I’ve got nothing against paganism in general, but we all know that Hollywood loves to make them the bad guys. Most of the details regarding the plot of Midsommar have been kept under wraps, but so far the buzz has been pretty good. Director Jordan Peele even went so far as to say it was “some of the most atrociously disturbing imagery I’ve ever seen on film.”

Stuber– July 12th

David Bautista has proven himself to be one of the best wrestlers turned actor of all time. He’s proven himself to have some pretty impressive comedic abilities as Draxx in the MCU and I’m excited to see him teaming up with Kumail Nanjiani for this action comedy. Of course, Nanjiani will have the comedic side of the film, which begs the question, “Just how much action will there be in this flick?” Well, with Iko Uwais in it I can guarantee there will be plenty of awesome fight sequences in it. Stuber will hopefully be a lighthearted movie that will serve as the perfect pallet cleanser in the middle of July to leave you refreshed and ready for the rest of the heavy movies hitting theaters this month. I have high hopes for Stuber, but I don’t think they’re unreasonable.

Crawl– July 12th

I’ve heard plenty of people talking about how absurd the premise is for Crawl. I mean, two people trapped in a flooding house in Florida during a hurricane being attacked by alligators? That’s just crazy, right? Well, if you think so, you’ve obviously never heard the tale of Florida Man. As a Floridian, I can tell you that what you might consider too absurd to be plausible, we consider a typical Tuesday. With that out of the way, I can’t tell you how excited I am for this movie. First of all, it’s being produced by Sam Raimi who knows his way around movies that take place in creepy houses. Second, it’s being directed by Alexander Aja who makes pretty intense (and awesome) horror movies. Third, killer animal movies are just fun.

The Lion King– July 19th

2019 is a big year for live-action Disney remakes and the next one up to bat is The Lion King, which was one of my favorites as a kid. It’s being directed by Jon Favreau, who honed his skills with CGI animals with The Jungle Book a few years ago. He’s also gathered up a pretty impressive cast of voice actors to bring the iconic story to life. Some of which include Donald Glover, Beyoncé, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. I wasn’t too impressed with the other live-action remakes that have theaters this year, but there’s always hope that this one will come close to being as good as the animated movies it’s based on. Either way, I’m actually really excited to see this version of the Lion King on the big screen this month.

Honorable Mention: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood– July 26th

Look, I get a lot of people like Quentin Tarantino movies. Heck, when I was young and didn’t know any better I liked a lot of them too. So, while I might hate him with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, I’m including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on this list because 1) I’m sure a lot of people are excited to see it and 2) because it means Tarantino is one step closer to retirement.

Those are my picks for the 5 movies to get excited about in July. There are a lot of other cool looking movies coming to theaters this month though. So, let me know in the comments below what movies you’re the most excited to see.
