5 New Movies to Look Forward to In June 2019

June Kicks Off the Summer Season in Theaters!

June signals the beginning of summer blockbuster season, which is great because with school out of session, throwing your kids in a theater for 2 hours can bring with it some well-earned relief. On the other hand, there are also plenty of R-rated movies that us grown-ups can hopefully escape to the movies as well. June offers up some animated films, plenty of sequels, and a world in which The Beatles never existed. Needless to say, there are a ton of great looking new movies hitting theaters, which is why Stars & Popcorn is here to help make sure your wallet doesn’t take a beating with a list of five movies you can look forward to this month. As always, I love to hear what movies you’re looking forward to, so be sure to leave a comment letting me know what movies you’re the most excited to see.

Dark Phoenix– June 7th

Fox’s X-Men franchise is coming to an end now that they’ve been bought out by Disney. While New Mutants is supposedly going to be released next year, it’s been pushed back so many times that Dark Phoenix might be the last one we actually get in theaters. For those of you having terrible flashbacks to Brett Ratners’ terrible attempt to tell the tale of Jean Grey’s transformation into the apocalyptic force known as the Phoenix, fear not, because this film is in the capable hands of Simon Kinberg who has produced such films as Logan, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. I doubt it will be the best entry in the franchise, but it should be a reliable one at the very least. Besides, who knows when we’ll get a chance to see the X-Man on the big screen again.

Men in Black: International– June 14th

One of the best parts of Thor: Ragnorak was the comedic chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Now the dup is teaming up again to revive the MIB series by taking a trip overseas to see how the Men in Black handle things across the pond. As always, they’re facing a world-ending threat that has them chasing leads all over the world. I loved the first Men in Black movie and this new movie looks like it takes a note from that entry. I’m hoping it will be an uproarious sci-fi adventure film with plenty of crazy and memorable aliens throughout it. Of course, even if it sucks Thompson and Hemsworth should be able to carry the film off their charisma and that alone should make it worth the price of admission.

The Dead Don’t Die– June 14th

It’s been a minute since we’ve gotten a good zombie movie, and even longer since we’ve gotten a really great zombie comedy (though Zombieland 2 is hitting theaters later this year). This one comes to us from director Jim Jarmusch, who is well known for having a truly eclectic filmography, which means I have no idea what to expect. Still, he’s managed to gather together an all-star cast including Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, and Bill Murray (who hasn’t had much luck in zombie apocalypses in the past). There have been quite a few straight-faced horror films this year, and we’ll even have Anabelle Comes Home as well as Child’s Play this month, so The Dead Don’t Die should be a welcomed change of pace at the very least.

Toy Story 4– June 21st

June 21st is going to be a weird day at the movies. On the one hand, our favorite animated toys are getting a fond farewell from Pixar in Toy Story 4. On the other, the killer toy Chucky is getting a remake in Child’s Play. As fun as Child’s Play looks in the trailer, I have to say that Toy Story 4 has a higher chance of being legitimately good. After all, Pixar has a habit of dominating the animated movie genre most years and Toy Story 4 doesn’t look like it’s going to be an exception. I grew up watching the Toy Story movies, so I’m sure I’ll be getting plenty of feels with this final goodbye to Woody, Buzz, and all the other characters I’ve come to know and love over the years. That’s why Toy Story 4 is the movie I’m most looking forward to this June.

Yesterday– June 28th

Danny Boyle has a pretty solid track record which is why I’m so intrigued by Yesterday. The film takes place in a world that suddenly forgets that The Beatles ever existed, except for one struggling musician who remembers their songs perfectly. Because of this he quickly rises to stardom thanks to the hits courtesy of John, Paul, George, and (I guess) Ringo. It sounds like a fantastical premise, which is why I honestly can’t wait to see it. I’m hoping it will be a film in which the lead struggles with the implications of earning a ton of money off songs he didn’t actually write, but still explores whether this is actual plagiarism since the group never actually existed in this world. The fact that the trailer has inspired so many questions is a pretty good sign in my book.

Of course, there are a ton of other new movies hitting theaters this month, so let me know which ones you can’t wait to see. As always, I’ll be putting out reviews as quickly as possible, so be sure to check back to see if the films are worth seeing or not.
