The Top 10 Best Movie Androids

5. Officer K- Blade Runner 2049

Replicants keep getting better looking.

It’s not often that a sequel manages to live up to the original, but Blade Runner 2049 was everything I could have wanted in the follow up to one of my favorite movies of all time. That’s mostly thanks to Ryan Gosling’s performance as a new age replicant simply known as “K.” While the replicants were the “bad guys” in the original film, K was an officer working for the police hunting down robots that are “malfunctioning.” Most movie androids might pass as human, K takes things a bit further. In his downtime, he seeks out a genuine connection with a fellow AI program in order to actually feel human. That might seem like a slippery slope for an android, but it leads to him being a hero every bit worthy of being Rick Dechard’s successor.

4. David/ Walter- Prometheus and Alien: Covenant

You team David or team Walter?

The Alien franchise has managed to scoop up a ton of spots on this list of movie androids (half-hearted shout out to Call from Alien: Resurrection). While Ash and Bishop’s might have been the originals, Michael Fassbender’s performance as two synthetics displaying the battling dualities we see so often when it comes to robots on the big screen. David first appeared in Prometheus where his desire for knowledge pushed him to a very dark place as he sought to become almost godlike. He returned again in Covenant but found himself with a new obstacle in Walter a similarly designed robot but without the whole god complex. David and Walter embodied everything we loved and feared in the original androids from the series, and that comes to a head in an epic battle between the two.

3. Ava- Ex Machina

Why do I keep falling in love with androids!?

The more realistic androids get the scarier they become. Ex Machina fully embraces the creepy side of technology as a programmer finds himself tasked with applying a Turing Test to an android. What ensues is a series of mind games that would impress even Hannibal Lector. Alicia Vikander lights up the screen as one of the most unnerving movie androids of all time. Despite the fact that she’s not human she shows an incredible understanding of psychology and slowly manipulates everyone around her to get exactly what she wants. Ava embodies the worst possible scenario when it comes to A.I. and serves as a dark warning to guys who buy robot girlfriends from Japan. For everyone else, Ex Machina is still a great movie that lovers of high sci-fi will enjoy.

2. T-800- The Terminator Franchise

The Terminator circles the parking lot for the 4th time looking for a good parking spot.

We’ve seen good movie androids on this list and bad movie androids on this list. However, coming in at number 2 is one that can do both. When Arnold Schwarzenegger first appeared as the T-800 he was a remorseless killing machine and one of the most terrifying movie time travelers of all time. Since then though, the character has become the hero of the franchise serving as the protector of John and Sarah Conner. Now, I’m not here to argue that there have been any good Terminator movies since Judgement Day, but the T-800 has become an iconic over the years no matter how bad the movies have gotten. However, there’s still time for franchise redemption now that Deadpool director Tim Miller is helming a reboot.

1. Roy Batty- Blade Runner

movie androids
More human than human.

So many of the movie androids on this list have sought to pass for human, but Roy Batty sought out what it meant to be alive. There were plenty of brilliantly portrayed replicants throughout the Blade Runner films, but Roy took things to a whole other level with his desire to embrace all the intangibles that make us “human.” A deadly combination of brain and brawn made him a warrior philosopher that clung tightly to what his experiences had shaped him over his short life. Because of him, even the most jaded Blade Runner on the service found himself starting to question his work “retiring” replicants. Rutger Hauer fully embraced the potential of his character making him one of the most intricate movie androids of all time. Unless Deckard was a replicant the whole time…
