The Top 10 Best Movie Monsters

Movie Monsters Give Us Nightmares in all the Best Ways!

While it’s always fun to see slashers and serial killers on the big screen, I’ve always been a fan of good old fashioned movie monsters. Sure, I’ve got a lot of love for the classics, but I’m more interested in seeing what sort of nightmarish creations that special effects gurus can come up with. There’s just something enthralling seeing what those twisted minds can give birth too. That’s why this week I’m taking a look at some of the scariest movie monsters we’ve been given over the years. Don’t expect to see Dracula or the Wolfman on this list, because I’m going for the ones that will keep you up and night jumping at every shadow. The end result are monsters from the darkest parts of some of the most creative minds in Hollywood. Hope you’re ready because this list is going to keep you up at night.

10. Dren- Splice

movie monsters
Ah, those rebellious teenage years sure can be terrifying.

Kicking off this list of movie monsters is perhaps the oddest entry on it. Dern was created when man went messing around where he shouldn’t have and ends up with a whole new species built from scratch. Like those idiots in Jurassic Park though, these scientists were “so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” In the film, two scientists create Dern, a human-animal hybrid that’s supposed to revolutionize science (who knows how though). Their little creation turns out to be a real handful though with a stinger, wings, and one hell of a libido. What makes Dern so damn creepy is that she’s a monster with human intelligence and uncontrollable animal instincts. Plus she brings up a lot of confusing feelings once she “grows up.”

9. Monsters- A Quiet Place

movie monsters
My what big teeth you have.

A Quiet Place was quite the breakout horror hit this year and there’s a damn good reason for that. While you might not get to see much of them the creatures in it are some of the most unnerving movie monsters I’ve seen in a long time. Completely blind, these monsters hunt by sound alone (it’s a wonder they don’t just keep running into trees and walls). While keeping quiet might seem like the obvious solution, these creatures are so sensitive to noise that they can hear you from miles away. Once they do, you’re going to find yourself in a mess of trouble because these creatures are all fangs and fury, not to mention they’re sporting some crazy armor that would make a tank jealous. Needless to say, once they find you, you’re dead. If you’re a fan of these guys, you’ll definitely want to check out some of the other terrifying aliens from movies.

8. Tooth Fairies- Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

movie monsters
They know if you’ve been flossing.

Despite the fact that he didn’t direct it, you can definitely feel Guillermo del Toro’s presence in Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (this isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last that del Toro appears on this list). The film is about an architect who movies into a huge house with his family in order to restore it. The thing is that there’s something creepy lurking in the basement and it’s not going to leave a dollar under your pillow at night. The tooth fairies in this movie are so terrifying because there are just so damn many of them and they’re smart, sadistic little bastards. Not only do they live off the teeth of children, but they’ll eliminate anything and anyone that gets between them and their next meal using every tool they can find laying around. Trust me when I say that if you ever see these little guys in your place, you’re going to want to call the Orkin man.

7. Mister Funny Shoes (AKA the Judas Breed)- The Mimic Films

movie monsters
Tell the exterminator that he’s going to need to bring the big guns.

And del Toro gets another of his movie monsters on this list. This time around he brings Katsaridaphobia to the big screen with his mid 90’s classic, Mimic. Once again scientists go messing around where they shouldn’t and it ends up biting them in the ass. This time around though they end up creating cockroaches who “mimic” their prey in order to hunt them. The problem is that they start to get pretty big after a few generations and have their eyes set napping the spot at the top of the food chain away from humans. While I’ve never been that squeamish when it comes to bugs, but I’ve also never met a 6 foot tall one on a dark subway platform before. Let’s just hope pepper spray is as effective on Mister Funny Shoes as Raid.

6. The Monster- The Monster

movie monsters
This is why I hate camping.

The Monster is one of my favorite recent horror discoveries because while it might not be a total splatterfest, it’s filled with some really intense moments. The monster at the center of the film doesn’t have much screen time, but when he does show up he’s a cross between a gorilla, a grizzly bear, and your darkest nightmare. With enough strength to flip a car trying to make a getaway, and enough smarts to remain hidden until just the right moment, this is one of those movie monsters though would be an apex predator in real life. I’m a pretty big guy and not even I think I would stand a chance against this beast. Everything that comes across this thing ends up looking like road kill smeared across the road after it gets done with them and that’s pretty terrifying.
