Versus Mode: Battle of the Twin Films!
Dante’s Peak vs Volcano
(1997)
The Show-Down: I’m not saying that there aren’t quite a few natural disaster movies out there. However, there aren’t a lot that center around unexpected volcanic eruptions placing thousands of lives at risk, leaving one man to save the day. The battle between Dante’s Peak and Volcano is “classic” when it comes to twin films, but today I’m going to declare a winner.
Winner: Volcano
I like Pierce Bronson and Linda Hamilton as much as the next guy, but the sheer absurdity of Tommy Lee Jones’ Volcano makes it a perfect popcorn movie.
Turner & Hooch vs K-9
(1989)
The Show-Down: Two movies both featuring “tough” cops partnered with dogs in order to solve their most recent case. Both go through quite a learning curve and discover that their new four-legged friends are more than pets. They’re partners.
Winner: Turner & Hooch
Tom Hanks all the way. Turner & Hooch is a classic that I’ve loved since childhood. Even 8-year-old me knew that K-9 wasn’t great the first time I saw it.
The Cave vs The Descent
(2005)
The Show-Down: As far as I know, spelunking/cave exploration movies are fairly uncommon. Cave exploration movies that feature groups of experienced adventurers discovering underground creatures with a hankering for human flesh are even more uncommon. Yet, two managed to hit theaters in 2005. What are the odds?
Winner: The Descent
As much as I liked the dragon twist in The Cave, The Descent is a chilling horror film with one of the best final girls in cinema history. Looks like the ladies take this round.
Burying the Ex vs Life After Beth
(2014)
The Show-Down: These next twin films put their protagonists in a pretty awkward situation. They both feature a 20-something white guy facing tragedy when his girlfriend dies suddenly. Things get even more complicated when their ex returns from the grave, convinced that nothing should change between them.
Winner: Burying the Ex
This one really came down to the fact that Anton Yelchin stars in Burying the Ex and I absolutely love that guy. He was just such a relatable and lovable guy in all his roles.
