Food Porn: Food Movies to Make You Drool

Food Movies to Fill that Hole Inside..

First of all, get your mind out of the gutter! When I say food porn, I’m talking about mouth-watering food movies that will leave your stomach grumbling, not some sort of weird fetish. Not that I’m kink-shaming, but there is a time and a place for all that and this is definitely not the site.

Now that we have that settled, I want to take a moment to talk about food in film. Hopefully, all of you know that sustenance is a necessity for survival. But who really wants to just survive when you can really live?! Sure, a lot of us might be on a diet after splurging over the holidays, but just because you’re on a diet doesn’t mean you can’t look at the menu. So with that being said, best prepare your salvatory glands, because I’m going to go over some of the most mouth water scenes from food movies you’ve ever seen!

Goodfellas

food movies
Wise guys tend to be good with knives.

When it comes to food movies, Goodfellas might have dropped a lot of f-bombs, but I dropped, even more, watching those cons make dinner in prison. I could try to describe it myself, but what’s the point when Ray Liotta did it so much better in the film?

“In prison, dinner was always a big thing. We had a pasta course and then we had a meat or fish. Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt, and he had this wonderful system for doing the garlic. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that he used to liquefy in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system.”

Hopefully, they paired those delicious meals with a nice glass of toilet wine. I hear 1990 was a good year for Chateau Cell Block-C.

Pulp Fiction

Doesn’t Brett know it’s rude not to offer your guests a bite?

I might not be a big fan of Quinten Tarantino (a phrase which is almost blasphemous among film school students), but I am a big fan of burgers. That’s why I have to admit that Pulp Fiction is one of the most mouth-watering food movies I’ve ever seen. Alas, Big Kahuna Burger might not be real, but it’s become a classic fictional burger chain for the likes of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. The fast food join has appeared in over seven films, but it was Pulp Fiction that first let us get a look at the titular Big Kahuna Burger itself. Despite the fact that Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta are sent as assassins to murder some college kids, that doesn’t mean they don’t have time to enjoy a nice juicy burger. Given the choice, I’d gladly choose one of these over a Royal with Cheese.

Pan’s Labyrinth

food movies
The Pale Man hasn’t been the same since gastric bypass surgery.

One of the creepiest movie monsters of all time is front and center when it comes to this foodie film scene. Ivana Baquero’s Ofelia is sent on her second quest to retrieve a dagger from the dan of the Pale Man, a child eating monster. She’s under strict instructions not to consume a thing in his home, which is easier said than done. When she gets there, there’s a feast that puts all other food movies to shame sitting there begging to be eaten. It’s a lavish meal with all sorts of delicacies just sitting there. To make things more tempting there’s enough to feed a small army. Of course, when you tell a kid not to do something, they’re probably going to do it anyways and Ofelia snatches herself a grape before she leaves. Luckily, it looks like the Pale Man skips leg day and Ofelia manages to escape. If it had been me, I’d have gone for the ham.

Spirited Away

#Me

There are a lot of scenes from animated food movies out there that deserve a shout out. Ratatouille, Lady and the Tramp, I could go on. However, the one that made a lasting impression on me in my youth was Spirited Away for two reasons: 1) I’m a slut for Asian food in general. So, I totally got it when Chichiro’s parents go after that food only to get turned into pigs. 2) The food in the film looks absolutely amazing. There might be a lot of great animated food movies out there, but none of them made my mouth water like the scene where No Face starts devouring that epic feast. Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greatest animators of all time (sorry, Walt Disney fans) and Spirited Away proves that he can give us all the feels and make our stomachs grumble too.

Marie Antoinette

food movies
Does… Does she eat all the cakes?

I figured it would be good to finish up this list of food movies with a bit of dessert. Marie Antoinette managed to previously grace Stars & Popcorns list of the 10 Best Movie Queens, but this time it’s getting a shout out for the insane cakes and pastries it has featured throughout the movie. There are so many throughout Marie Antoinette that I could feel myself starting to get adult-onset diabetes just sitting there watching it. However, for those of you with a sweet tooth, this film is foodie heaven. I would say it even puts other sweet centric films like Willy Wonka and Chocolat to shame with its gratuitous use of desserts. It’s a film that emphasis the extravagance of the French ruling class at the time and it’s a wonder none of the actors fell into a sugar coma. I have no idea how Marie managed to keep her girlish figure with all those cakes around. Personally, I’d look like a Macy’s Day float after a week.

Honorable Mention: Oldboy

food movies
It’s a delicacy?

At first glance, Oldboy might not seem like it fits in with the rest of these food movies. After all, it’s one of the most brutal revenge films of all time (Koreans are pretty terrifying when it comes to them). However, there is one scene in the film that will burn a hole into the minds of even the most devoted foodies out there. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the scene where Min-sik Choi eats a live squid in a restaurant isn’t one of the most memorable in movie history.

Those are only a few of the epic food porn scenes out there. However, I hope this four-course (plus dessert) meal of food movies is enough to hold you over until your next big feast. Of course, I love trying new things, so if you have a favorite movies with gratuitous food sequences, leave a comment below. As always, I’ll be updating this article as more movies hit the big screen. Until then Bon apatite!
