5 New Movies to Look Forward to In May 2019

As good as April was for new movies, it’s got nothing on May. Despite the fact that there are no superhero films hitting theaters, there are a ton of other movies I’m incredibly excited to see. In fact, I dare say that there just might be something for everyone. There are some perfect date movies, a few movies to remind us of our childhoods, and a couple of long-awaited sequels coming to a cineplex near you. Of course, there are also a few movies I’m dreading getting released as well. Not to worry though, because (as always) I’ve put together a handy guide of the movies you should be the most excited for this month. As always, I’m excited to hear which new movies you’re looking forward to this month, so be sure to leave a comment below!

Long Shot (May 3rd)

I have a habit of thinking every girl I’ve ever gone out with is way out of my league, so it’s no wonder I’m excited to see this new romantic comedy in which Seth Rogan shoots his shot with one of the most beautiful and badass women in Hollywood, Charlize Theron. It comes from director Jonathan Levine who’s brought us such films as Warm Bodies and 50/50, so I’m actually confident that this will be a pretty great flick. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a romantic comedy since the genre has become a trash heap in recent years. So, if you’re looking for a perfect date movie, this just might be it.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (May 10th)

Like so many other millennials, I spent my bus rides too and from school playing Pokemon on my trusted Gameboy. I even went so far as to dabble in the card game and even watched the anime for a while. So, I’m pretty excited about a live action movie based on the franchise. Toss in the fact that it’s no secret that I’ve got a huge man-crush on Ryan Reynolds and it’s a safe bet to assume that I already have my opening night ticket reserved. Don’t just take my word for it though, the trailer looks pretty spectacular and is full of great one-liners. Hopefully, this is a welcome relief to all the terrible anime and video-game adaptions we’ve had over the years.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (May 17th)

Typically sequels are never as good as the original. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case with John Wick movies so far. The first one raised the bar for the action genre. It took a relatively simple premise for a revenge movie and executed it perfectly. John Wick 2 managed to take everything I loved about the original and expand on the mythos of the unique universe the character inhabited. I have no idea if John Wick 3 will be as good as the last two films, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s going to be one hell of a wild ride. John Wick Chapter 3 is easily one of my most anticipated new movies for 2019 and I can’t wait to see if it lives up to my expectations.

Aladdin (May 24th)

Disney has gotten a little rambunctious with its live-action remakes. So much so that they’ve become a film franchise in their own right. I’ll admit that the films have been hit or miss in the past, with the most recent entry, Dumbo, proving to be just so-so. However, I’ve got a good feeling about Aladdin. It was one of my favorite animated Disney movies growing up and I’m hoping that this live-action remake manages to capture even a fraction of the magic the original did. The fact that Guy Richie is directing gives me some hope, but he’s let me down in the past a few times. Still, if Aladdin doesn’t work out, there’s always The Lion King in July.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (May 31st)

Growing up, I was a big fan of giant monster movies and always saw Godzilla as the king of the kaiju. So, it’s no wonder I was a fan of the American Godzilla movie (the 2014 one, not the 1998 one). It was an epic giant monster movie with tons of destruction and well crafted human elements to keep the story grounded. The sequel though looks to have a lot of my favorite giant monsters making appearances alongside Godzilla and I’m beyond excited to see these beasts duke it out on the big screen. I’m especially excited because it looks like this film is going to lead to a long-anticipated thrown down between Godzilla and King Kong in 2020.

It was hard to narrow it down to just these 5 new movies in May. If there are any that you think should have earned a spot on this list, be sure to leave a comment below. As always, I’ll be posting reviews as soon as these films hit theaters. So, be sure to check back and see if these new movies managed to live up to expectations.
