Now Streaming: November 2018
Thanksgiving Brings Plenty of Streaming Options to Relieve the Stress.
Thanksgiving is coming up soon, which means the vast majority of us are going to be forced to spend times with our families. Fear not though, because there are a lot of great things coming to streaming services this month to help take the edge off. We’ve got everything from original movies, to action flicks, to new series to enjoy from Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. So, when the food is gone and the booze isn’t helping take the edge off your vaguely racist uncle’s rants on the “good things Trump” has done, you can always slink off to a dark room and start streaming some quality content. Don’t even worry about scrolling through until you find something good, because I’ve already taken a look at the new stuff coming to streaming services this month and threw together a bunch of suggestions for you. So, enjoy your turkey day, but know that there are plenty of ways to escape from your family without absolutely destroying your liver.
Prime
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (November 1st)
Remember that uncle I mentioned? Want to really give him something to grumble about? Then have I got one hell of a movie for you! The film features the likes of Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Terance Stamp as a pair of drag queens and a transgender woman tearing through the Australian outback in an RV performing a variety of cabaret films. It’s one of the greatest drag movies of all time and fits perfectly with a lot of the other content coming to streaming services this month.
Homecoming (November 2)
Amazon has had some pretty solid series that it’s premiered over the past year and the newest one starring Julia Roberts looks like it’s going to take a hard look at the struggles that soldiers face after they come home from war. Roberts stars as a woman who works at a facility helping soldiers to transition back to civilian life, but it would seem that there are some dark secrets that lurk beneath the surface. Roberts is forced to confront them when the Department of Defense comes knocking with all sorts of questions.
Wonder (November 2)
Looking for something a little more heartwarming as the world burns around you? Wonder tells the tale of a deformed little boy who starts going to school for the first time. As expected, he would have probably done better just being thrown to some wolves than 1st graders. Luckily, he’s got some pretty swell parents who help him learn that true beauty is on the inside and he shouldn’t care what a bunch of booger picking kids have to say. It’s a feel-good movie that will definitely bring a tear or two to your eyes.
Patriot Season 2 (November 9)
Patriot is a series that takes a look at the incredible stress a spy undergoes while on a mission and does so in a way that you’ll feel in your bones. As the series goes on the stressors in his life continue to build and build, and every time he puts out one fire, two more pop up. Honestly, this is a series that spoke volumes to me when I was going through a lot in my life and it was nice to see I wasn’t the only one with too much on my plate, which is why I’m so excited to see season 2 coming out soon.
Siberia (November 17)
Keanu Reeves not only makes pretty damn good movies but also seems like a genuinely good guy, which is why I’ve included his most recent thriller Siberia as a movie you should definitely stream this month. In the film, he plays a diamond dealer in search of his missing partner before he can close a deal. Things aren’t what they seem though as he finds himself becoming deeply entrenched in the Russian underworld. If you’re looking for an intense thriller this month, this is definitely a movie to add to your watch list.
Hulu
The Big Lebowski (November 1st)
The dude abides in what might just be the greatest Cohen Brothers movie of all time. Just in time for the 20th anniversary, this film is coming to a few streaming services and you can catch it on Hulu. If you haven’t seen it, you’ll definitely want to check out this neo-noir flick featuring zen master Jeff Bridges as a bowler who gets tangled up in a kidnapping when he goes searching for his lost rug. It’s as weird as it sounds in the best possible way.
The Birdcage (November 1st)
It’s hard not to miss Robin Williams these days, but fortunately, he left us with a ton of amazing movies to remember him by. This month a film that’s more relevant than ever is coming back to Hulu for us all to enjoy. In it, a man must hide his gay parent’s sexuality from his fiance’s incredibly conservative parents. What ensues is a beautiful juggling act as the parents meet for the first time to celebrate their children’s engagement. It’s a beautiful film with plenty of laughs and a message we need more than ever these days.
007 Movies (November 1st)
Some people watch the Macy’s Day parade on Thanksgiving. Other’s watch football. This year though, I think I’m going to sit down and enjoy one of the greatest spies to ever grace the silver screen. This year, Hulu is dusting off a whole slew of 007 movies and I couldn’t be happier to have a full-blown marathon at my fingertips. If you haven’t had a chance to check out all the incarnations of this legendary super spy, you’re in luck. Heck, I might just have to rank them all myself once I finish rewatching them all.
Into The Dark: Flesh & Blood (November 2nd)
Blumhouse has teamed with Hulu to bring a new horror movie based on a Holiday to us every month for the next year. The first film The Body wasn’t actually half bad, which means I’m more than willing to give their November horror film Flesh & Blood. Details about Flesh & Blood are being kept tightly under wraps, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be adding it to my queue as soon as it comes out. It might not be the best new horror movie coming to streaming services this month, but I’m going to bet that it’ll be worth watching.
Big Hero 6 (November 10th)
One of the more underrated superhero movies in recent years is the Disney animated film Big Hero 6. It actually won an Academy Award the year it was released and for good reason. It’s a heartfelt adventure about a boy, his robot, and a group of high tech inventors who use their discoveries to suit up and ave the world from an evil genius. It’s a perfect family-friendly film to watch once the tryptophan kicks in after eating all that turkey.
