The Top 10 Best Halloween Movies
Celebrate Halloween with these Awesome Halloween Movies!
Happy Halloween everyone! It’s that time of year when kids in costumes come knocking on your door in hopes of getting buckets of candy. For those of us a little too old to get away with those shenanigans, it’s a time for us to load up on scary movies with slashers, serial killers, and monsters. Of course, those movies are all the better when they actually take place on Halloween, which is why I took the time to find the 10 Best Halloween Movies for you to enjoy this holiday season. I decided to mix things up by including a little something for everyone on this list. You’ll find some great horror movies, a comedy or two, and even a few family-friendly flicks on here. However, all these movies have one thing in common, they all take place around Halloween. So, if you’re stuck at home instead of partying it up at a Halloween party, fear not because these Halloween movies will bring the party to you!
10. Hell Fest
Oddly enough one of the better Halloween movies I’ve seen in years just so happens to be one that hit theaters only a few weeks ago. Hell Fest tells the tale of a group of college kids who decide to hit up a horror theme park to celebrate the holiday. Of course, it wouldn’t make this list if the heroes only had to keep themselves from screaming from actors in masks. Instead, they have to outwit a masked killer taking advantage of the festivities by killing people in front of everyone. Since it’s a horror theme park though, it’s impossible to tell what’s real and what’s not. It might not be the scariest movie I’ve seen in theaters this year, but with all the theme parks getting into the spirit of things, this is one movie that will make things all the scarier if you get a chance to visit a haunted house!
9. The Predator
Another new release manages to make this list of Halloween movies. While The Predator might not revolve around Halloween, it does take place during the holiday. In fact, a kid steals Predator tech and wears it as their costume as they go out trick or treating. That doesn’t go so well for the kid when it’s rightful owner comes looking for his mask and blaster, but he’s going to have to get through the kid’s Army Ranger dad and his veteran buddies if he wants his mask back. Things really heat up quickly in this Shane Black movie and if you’re a fan of scary aliens and sci-fi movies in general, then this is a great movie for you. What I especially loved about it is that Black seems to embrace all the things fans loved about the original Predator movies and focused on giving us exactly what we wanted in this new installment to the franchise.
8. Ginger Snaps
There are a ton of horror movies out there that serve as metaphors for girls going through puberty (check out Raw if you haven’t), but Ginger Snaps is the biggest cult classic of them all. Those who love this movie simply won’t shut up about it, but I can’t blame them since it’s actually a pretty decent werewolf movie (though it’s not my favorite big-screen incarnation of this classic movie monster). Ginger finds herself going through some “changes” that lead to a lot of “bloodshed” (see where I’m going with the metaphor). Things go from bad to worse for Ginger once she starts getting hair in unsightly places, like her face. As the full moon approaches it’s unclear if Ginger will be able to control her urges as the beast inside awakens.
7. Night of the Demons
The 80’s were a glorious and terrible time for horror movies, but one of my favorite trashy scary movies from that period of time is Night of the Demons. It’s pretty much the embodiment of every horror film cliche from that time period, and fortunately for this list, it just so happens to take place of Halloween. A group of kids decides to hold a Halloween party in an abandoned building that just so happened to be possessed by demons (that’s right, the building is possessed). Things go from bad to worse for the stereotypical heroes as they slowly get taken over one by one. If you love over the top gore using practical makeup effects and cheesy dialogue, then this is a must-see for you. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing a remake of this campy horror movie. After all, Hollywood loves remakes.
6. Trick ‘r’ Treat
There are a lot of Halloween anthology series out there, but one of my favorites is Trick ‘r’ Treat. The film ties together 4 stories that take place in a fictional town one fateful Halloween. At the center of the tale is one of the creepiest kids you’ve ever seen, Sam, a trick or treater dressed up with a pumpkin mask. This film has everything from ghosts to killers to monsters that go bump in the night. Personally, I think this is a pretty spectacular movie to watch during Halloween and is sure to scare the pants off you. Unlike so many other anthology films, it doesn’t spread itself too thin and manages to maintain a cohesive story and every one of the tales in it features a chilling twist in the end. Definitely a movie worth checking out this year if you haven’t seen it yet.
